A simple method for tuning the performance characteristics of fluorescent ratiometric sensors based on surface-immobilized monolayers of π-conjugated molecules enabled gradual adjustment of the sensitivity and the analyte detection range of the sensor. This approach has been applied to fine-tune the sensing performance of a prototype ratiometric chemosensor for fluoride ions.

A novel red emitting fluorescent probe exhibiting a 143 nm Stokes shift for the detection of fluoride ions in an aqueous solution was developed. The probe displays a rapid response, high selectivity and good sensitivity towards F(-). Application of the probe for the selective detection of intracellular F(-) has been successfully demonstrated in living cells.

The structure and photophysical properties of a new triad (borane–bithiophene–BODIPY) 1 have been investigated. Triad 1 exhibits unprecedented tricolour emission when excited at the borane centred high energy absorption band and also acts as a selective fluorescent and colorimetric sensor for fluoride ions with ratiometric response. The experimental results are supported by computational studies.

A novel fluoride free protocol for highly truncated anatase TiO2 nanocrystals with exposed {001} facets by preferential adsorption of CO3(2-) ions is developed. Experimental observations were corroborated by first principle quantum chemical DFT calculations. The synthesized anatase TiO2 showed improved photocatalytic activity.

A new and convenient procedure for synthesis of homoallylic alcohols in generally good to excellent yields has been developed. The bismuth-mediated Barbier-type allylation of aldehydes (aromatic, aliphatic, alicyclic and heterocyclic) with allyl bromide has been carried out smoothly in water in the presence of fluoride ions.

Cobalt-containing polyoxotitanates (TiCo) are excellent precursors for the simple and scalable preparation of Nocera-type CoOx water-oxidation electrocatalysts. The TiCo cages serve as a reservoir for cobalt ions in a titania matrix on fluoride-doped tin oxide electrodes, and form, in situ, the active CoOx catalyst for O2 evolution with high stability in phosphate buffer in pH neutral water.
