This longitudinal study investigated the impact of different Frequency Patterns (FP) on the syntactic production of a six-year-old EFL learner in a home context. Target syntactic constructions were presented using games and plays and were traced for their occurrence patterns in input and output. Following each instruction period, the constructions were measured through immediate and delayed ora...

One of the major motivations for a constructionbased approach to syntax is that a given rule of syntactic formation can often be associated with more than one semantic specification. For example, a pair of expressions like purple plum and alleged thief call on different rules of semantic combination. The first involves something related to intersection of sets: a purple plum is a member of the ...

This paper' presents an analysis of dynamic temporal reasoning with Dutch adverbials of aspectual focus. The crucial property of focus constructions is the inherent opposition between the actual value for a given parameter and the possible alternatives in the speaker's expectation. The dynamic perspective tries to account for the fact that when new information is added, certain components are u...

The chapter analyzes the system of focus-sensitive particles in Vietnamese. EVEN/ ALSO/ONLY foci are discussed across syntactic categories, and Vietnamese is found to organize its system of focus-sensitive particles along three dimensions of classification: (i) EVEN vs. ALSO vs. ONLY; (ii) particles c-commanding foci vs. particles c-commanding backgrounds; (iii) adverbial focus-sensitive partic...

We present a semantic analysis of the English it-cleft, concentrating on the exhaustive meaning which the cleft introduces. Our analysis has two novel aspects. The first novel aspect concerns the relationship of the it-cleft with focus. Clefts are generally regarded as focus-marking constructions. On the simplest account, the entire pivot of a cleft is taken to be focused. But in fact this is n...

Le programme d'analyse~ dont nous allons d~finir ici une partie, fait partie d'un programme de traduction automatique de l'allemand en d'autres langues choisies ~ volont~. Nous prendrons pour base une forme du programme id~alis~e, qui sans consideration de la capacit~'limit~e de l'ordinateur explique toutes les differences des constructions allemandes entre elles. De cette mani~re on dolt regar...

Abstract The study claims that contemporary Udmurt has two main strategies for expressing a ‘constituent negation reading’. Standard makes use of inverse-scope constructions involving sentential negation, i.e. morphosyntactically negated predicate and pragmatic focus in the scope negation. other strategy involves negator ńe borrowed from Russian, which immediately precedes constituent combines ...

It is known that implications in powerset-based closure systems correspond to Horn approximations in propositional logic frameworks. Here we focus on the problem of implications between injective partial orders. We set up the definitions that allow one to apply standard constructions of implications, and formally characterize the propositional theory obtained. We describe also some experimental...

In this paper, we introduce discrete conics, polygonal analogues of conics. We show that discrete conics satisfy a number of nice properties analogous to those of conics, and arise naturally from several constructions, including the discrete negative pedal construction and an action of a group acting on a focus-sharing pencil of conics.
