The near-field of surface plasmons is locally confined to nanometer dimensions. Here, we use surface plasmons to initiate polymer-functionalization of mesoporous silica films allowing subsequent ionic permselectivity gating based on polymer charge. We expect this functionalization approach to open a new dimension of functional miniaturization e.g. in nanofluidics.

A novel porous organic polymer has been synthesized using the molecular building block approach to deliberately encompass aldehyde functionalities amenable to post functionalization. The resultant porous framework allows a facile, one-step quantitative and post-synthetic functionalization by amines, permitting enhanced CO2 sorption properties.

A catalytic meta-selective C-H functionalization of 2-phenylpyridines using a range of tertiary halides is described. The protocol is simple to perform and uses commercially available reagents to construct challenging quaternary carbon centres in a regioselective manner. Preliminary studies suggest the C-H functionalization proceeds through a radical process directed via a remote σ-activation.

An unprecedented functionalization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) has been conveniently achieved by the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of a cyclic nitrone. This organic functionalization yields materials with a great solubility in DMF (close to 10 mg per mL of DMF) preferentially occurring at the defects of the MWCNT sp(2) network.

An easily available iron catalyst was developed to accomplish the C H functionalization of indoles with a-aryl-a-diazoesters in high yields under mild conditions.
