A dried powder from basidiomycetous fungi, Ganoderma lucidum, has been used in East Asia in therapies for several different diseases, including cancer. However, the molecular mechanisms involved in the biological actions of Ganoderma are not well understood. We have recently demonstrated that phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI 3-kinase) and nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) regulate motility of ...

The aim of this study was to conduct a molecular and biochemical characterization and to compare the antioxidant and antiproliferative activities of four Ganoderma isolates belonging to Ganoderma lucidum (Gl-4, Gl-5) and Ganoderma resinaceum (F-1, F-2) species. The molecular identification was performed by ITS and IGS sequence analyses and the biochemical characterization by enzymatic and prote...

In humans, 5alpha-reductase is involved in the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Triterpenoids isolated from ethanol extracts of Ganoderma lucidum (Fr.) Krast (Ganodermataceae) inhibited 5alpha-reductase activity. The presence of the C-3 carbonyl group and of the C-26-alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl group was characteristic of almost all inhibitors isolated from G. lucidum.

Bioassay-guided fractionation of methanol extract of Ganoderma lucidum gave a pure cholesterol esterase inhibitor. On the basis of spectroscopic analysis and comparison with data from the literature, its structure was identified as 5alpha,8alpha-epidioxyergosta-6,22-dien-3beta-ol (compound I). Compound (I) inhibited cholesterol esterase with an IC50 value of 42 micronM. A Lineweaver-Burk plot r...

Ganoderma lucidum (reishi mushroom) has been used in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine as a herbal remedy for over 2000 years. Studies have shown that G. lucidum has anti-allergic, anti-oxidant, anti-tumor, anti-viral, and anti-inflammatory properties. A review of the literature revealed that there were no studies examining the use of G. lucidum for the treatment of skin diseases. Here,...
