Nitric oxide produced endogenously in vagal neurons modulates gastrointestinal motor activity as an important non-aderenergic and non-cholinergic neurotransmitter. Other than through endogenous biosynthesis, a high concentration of nitric oxide also occurs by chemical reactions within the stomach in the presence of gastric acid through the entero-salivary re-circulation of dietary nitrate. Alth...

The pattern of gastric emptying after truncal vagotomy and drainage is usually biphasic. An early rapid phase is followed by a characteristically abrupt transition to slow emptying. The mechanisms responsible for this pattern were studied in six dogs with truncal vagotomy and pyloroplasty, fitted with a proximal duodenal cannula. Gastric emptying was measured using gamma camera imaging of a rad...

BACKGROUND The effect of histamine H2 receptor antagonists on gastric emptying is controversial. AIMS To determine the effects of ranitidine, famotidine, and omeprazole on gastric motility and emptying. PATIENTS AND METHODS Fifteen normal subjects underwent simultaneous antroduodenal manometry, electrogastrography (EGG), and gastric emptying with dynamic antral scintigraphy (DAS). After 30 ...

In our daily life, individuals encounter with various types of stress. Accumulation of daily life stress (chronic stress) often causes gastrointestinal symptoms and functional gastrointestinal diseases. Although some can adapt toward chronic stress, the adaptation mechanism against chronic stress remains unknown. Although acute stress delays gastric emptying and alters upper gastrointestinal mo...

Obese CCK-1 receptor-lacking Otsuka Long Evans Tokushima fatty (OLETF) rats are hyperphagic relative to control, nonmutant Long Evans Tokushima Otsuka (LETO) rats. This study sought to assess whether the overeating observed in OLETF rats is associated with changes in gastric emptying rates or detection of gastric volume. We performed experiments in both 12- and 29-wk-old OLETF and LETO rats to ...

UNLABELLED An animal model of gastric emptying may have use in the study of gastric physiology and pharmacoscintigraphy. The pig has anatomy and physiology similar to that of humans. Our aim was to develop a model of gastric emptying in the pig. It was not possible to perform this study in conscious pigs; therefore, an anesthetic model was developed. METHODS Fifteen studies were performed on ...

We investigated whether dorsal hindbrain and/or peripheral cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript peptide (CARTp) acts to suppress gastric emptying of a caloric stimulus. Furthermore, effects of dorsal hindbrain CARTp on sucrose consumption and licking microstructure was studied, as well as the possible contribution of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) receptors to mediate effects of ...

We present a rare case of a patient with delayed gastric emptying, gastric phytobezoar formation, and osteosclerotic bone lesions as an atypical association with multiple myeloma. Associated gastric features in myeloma, which include diffuse infiltration, gastric plasmacytomas, or delayed gastric emptying, are rare and have a poor prognosis.

OBJECTIVE We aimed to review gastric dysmotility in critically ill children: 1) its pathophysiology, with a focus on critical care diseases and therapies that affect gastric motility, 2) diagnostic methodologies, and 3) current and future potential therapies. DATA SOURCES Eligible studies were identified from PubMed and MEDLINE. STUDY SELECTION Literature search included the following key t...

Gastric emptying was measured using a gamma camera in 22 patients with anorexia nervosa, in 10 patients of normal or high weight with bulimia nervosa and in 10 controls. Patients with anorexia nervosa were tested (1) while underweight and selecting their own diet (10 patients); (2) underweight, but receiving an adequate diet on an inpatient unit (refeeding diet) (12 patients); and (3) under ref...
