In the first half of the 20th century, the polio pandemic spread across much of the world, afflicting hundreds of thousands each year. The Global Alliance for Infections in Surgery appreciates the great effort of the task force who derived and validated the Sepsis-3 definitions and considers the new definitions an important step forward in the evolution of our understanding of sepsis. Nevertheless, more than a year after their publication, we have a few concerns regarding the use of the Sepsis-3 definitions.

A defensive alliance in a graph is a set $S$ of vertices with the property that every vertex in $S$ has at most one moreneighbor outside of $S$ than it has inside of $S$. A defensive alliance $S$ is called global if it forms a dominating set. The global defensive alliance number of a graph $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a global defensive alliance in $G$. In this article we study the global ...

We examine the lived experiences of high-school students who participated in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ)-centered activism of some kind, highlighting the promise of gay-straight alliance groups by comparing the experiences of students at schools with gay-straight alliances (GSA schools) with the experiences of students at schools that did not have an LGBTQ-specific gr...

Few studies have examined school-based factors associated with variability in the victimization and health of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth. Among 15,965 students in 45 Wisconsin schools, we identified differences based on Gay–Straight Alliance (GSA) presence. Youth in schools with GSAs reported less truancy, smoking, drinking, suicide attempts, and sex with...

the gravitational search algorithm (gsa) is a novel optimization methodbased on the law of gravity and mass interactions. it has good ability to search forthe global optimum, but its searching speed is really slow in the last iterations. sothe hybridization of particle swarm optimization (pso) and gsa can resolve theaforementioned problem. in this paper, a modified pso, which the movement ofpar...

This paper analyzes the application of global sensitivity analysis (GSA) to the improvement of processes using various case studies. First, a brief description of the methods applied is given, and several case studies are examined to show how GSA can be applied to the study to improve the processes. The case studies include the identification of processes; comparisons of the Sobol, E-FAST and M...

Schistosomiasis, one of the 17 neglected tropical diseases listed by the World Health Organization, presents a substantial public health and economic burden. Of the 261 million people requiring preventive chemotherapy for schistosomiasis in 2013, 92% of them lived in sub-Saharan Africa and only 12.7% received preventive chemotherapy. Moreover, in 2010, the WHO reported that schistosomiasis mort...
