the ideal approach for adequate management of subclinical hyperthyroidism (low levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone [tsh] and normal thyroid hormone level) is a matter of intense debate among endocrinologists. the prevalence of low serum tsh levels ranges between 0.5% in children and 15% in the elderly population. mild subclinical hyperthyroidism is more common than severe subclinical hyperthy...
about 25-50% of graves' disease (gd) patients develop thyroid eye diseases, which is associated with inflammatory process and abnormalities in the levels of several cytokines in orbital tissues in gd. the aim of this study was to determine the th1 and th2 serum cytokines in patients with gd with or without ophthalmopathy. serum levels of cytokines and autoantibodies including interferon-g...
introduction thyroid storm is a rare complication of graves' disease that can carry a poor prognosis. in order to prevent major complications, thyroid storm must be quickly identified in patients and treatment must be promptly implemented. medical treatment is usually initiated with antithyroid medications, such as propylthiouracil (ptu), methimazole, and beta-blockers. however, some patients m...
conclusions patients treated with ptu should be closely monitored and followed up, even if the drug has been used for several years. when patients develop progressive dyspnea with alveolar opacities on chest imaging that cannot be explained otherwise, alveolar hemorrhage should be an important differential diagnosis while investigating the case. early diagnosis and prompt discontinuation of the...
background: infectious agents have been suspected as a triggering factor for development of autoimmune thyroid disease (atd). some reports from western countries have suggested association between helicobacter pylori (hp) infection and atd. objective: to investigate the association of atd with cag a seropositivity in a population with high rate and early age of onset of hp infection. methods: i...
background: killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (kir) are expressed on nk cells and a subset of t cells. the variable kir receptors along with their ligands, hla class i, influence risk for autoimmune and malignant diseases. objective: to investigate the kir gene profiles in relation to susceptibility to graves’ disease in patients with ophthalmopathy. methods: kir genes profiles were ana...
Objective(s):The aim of this study was to determine whether technetium (99mTc) uptake is a relevant method for the differential diagnosis of Graves disease and subacute thyroiditis and calculate its cutoff value in case of its relevancy. Methods: A total of 69 patients, who were followed up (>3 months) in our hospital for thyrotoxi...
case presentation a 28-year old chinese female was treated with carbimazole (cmz) for graves’ disease with hyperthyroidism. two weeks later, she developed myalgia and proximal muscle weakness. investigations showed evidence of myopathy. cmz was stopped and rapid improvement of clinical condition and biochemical parameters ensued. conclusions rapid decrement of thyroid hormone level is recognize...
