The purpose of this study was to determine whether high-school football players showed risks of fluid deficits during two-a-day training (Part 1), and whether implementing a drinking strategy could acutely improve the markers of hydration (Part 2). In Part 1, pre-training urine specific gravity (USG) and pre- and post-training body weight were measured at the morning session for 5 consecutive d...

It is a principle recognised not only by our own but by other legal systems that ignorance of the law is no excuse for violating it. This is also expressed in the form of a legal presumption that everyone knows the law. So it is the duty of every person to be acquainted with that part of it which concerns him or her. In recent years there have been a number of malpractice suits based on lack of...

We study the modifications on the metric of an isolated self-gravitating bosonic superconducting cosmic string in a scalar-tensor gravity in the weak-field approximation. These modifications are induced by an arbitrary coupling of a massless scalar field to the usual tensorial field [email protected] [email protected] Also at Grupo de F́ısica Teórica, Universidade Católica de Petrópolis. hela...

In this work, we present the gravitational field generated by a cosmic string carrying a timelike current in the scalar-tensor gravities. The mechanism of formation and evolution of wakes is fully investigated in this framework. We show explicitly that the inclusion of electromagnetic properties for the string induces logarithmic divergences in the accretion problem.

We define energy (E) and compute its values for gravitational systems involving terms quadratic in curvature. There are significant differences, both conceptually and concretely, from Einstein theory. For D=4, all purely quadratic models admit constant curvature vacua with arbitrary Lambda, and E is the "cosmological" Abbott-Deser (AD) expression; instead, E always vanishes in flat, Lambda=0, b...

This study explores the extent to which richer central cities are associated with slower suburban sprawl. The authors use a unique approach to categorizing municipalities in urbanized areas based on their relative densities. Richness is measured in terms of the central city’s relative share of high-income households. The central finding (both for the decade from 1990 to 2000 and for 2000 to 200...

The mean retention time (MRT) of stained hay through the whole digestive tract and its digestibility were measured in Japanese sika deer (Cervus nippon) and were compared with those in sheep when lucerne (Medicago sativa) hay was fed at 10, 20 and 30 g/kg body-weight. The recoveries in faeces of plastic particles with five specific gravities were also measured in deer. MRT for deer was signific...

This data article provides the weights, specific gravities and chemical compositions (moisture, protein, fat, ash, and carbohydrate) of potato tubers, for food processing use, from the Tokachi, Kamikawa and Abashiri areas of Hokkaido, Japan. Potato tubers of four cultivars ('Toyoshiro', 'Kitahime', 'Snowden' and 'Poroshiri') were employed in the current study. The weights and specific gravities...

Euclidean dilaton gravity in two dimensions is studied exploiting its representation as a complexified first order gravity model. All local classical solutions are obtained. A global discussion reveals that for a given model only a restricted class of topologies is consistent with the metric and the dilaton. A particular case of string motivated Liouville gravity is studied in detail. Path inte...

T SHOULD BE POSSIBLE to separate cells of different types by utilizing differences in their specific gravities. Centrifugation of whole blood against high density fluids has been successful, at least in part, in separating leucocytes from peripheral blood.15 Gum acacia3 and bovine albumin1’2’5 have been used in this manner, but the method has been criticized because of the cost and labor involv...
