Hydroxyapatite adsorbs various substances, but little is known about the effects on oral bacteria of adsorption onto hydroxyapatite derived from scallop shells. In present study, we analyzed Streptococcus mutans scallop-derived hydroxyapatite. When was mixed with S. mutans, a high proportion bacterial cells adsorbed in time-dependent manner. An RNA sequencing analysis showed that upregulation g...

Fifteen patients had bilateral hip replacement with a porous-coated hip replacement in one hip and in the contralateral hip the same design. which had adjunctive hydroxyapatite coating on the porous coating. These patients were followed for an average of 6.5 years (range, 5-7.9 years). There was no difference in the clinical Harris Hip Scores between the two hips in these patients. The radiogra...

Calcium Phosphate cement has been the subject of intense investigation over the past few years. This study compares difference in biocompatibility between the three main phases of Ca-P, namely Hydroxyapatite, Dicalcium phosphate and β-Tricalcium phosphate. It involves composite preparation followed by cell test. Material parameters were stoichiometry (Hydroxyapatite with Ca-P ratio of 1.67, Dic...

Protein A and C, which are major components of the acidic proline-rich proteins in human saliva, were digested, before or after adsorption to hydroxyapatite, with alkaline phosphatase, trypsin, thermolysin and a proteinase preparation from salivary sediment. The results demonstrate that the binding site is located in the proline-poor N-terminal part of the protein, possibly between residues 3 ...

A procedure for the preparation of Strontium Hydroxyapatite is adapted to produce high purity and better homogeneity ceramic with good Crystallinity. The strontium substituted bone cement has potential for use in orthopedic surgeries. Ionic Strontium (Sr) in humans shares the same physiological pathway as calcium and can be deposited in the mineral structure of the bone. In the present study, a...

The purpose of this study was to establish whether UV/ozone (O3) irradiation method can effectively decontaminate hydroxyapatite surfaces, including those modified by the treatment with 30% phosphoric acid solution through morphological and chemical surface analyses (surface roughness, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and wettability), and to evaluate the in vitro response of osteoblast-like MC...

Destructive osteoarthritis is characterised by rapidly progressive joint destruction associated with intra-articular deposition of hydroxyapatite crystals. The possible role of such crystals in the pathogenesis of this condition was investigated by testing the ability of hydroxyapatite crystals to stimulate the production of bone resorbing activity from mouse peritoneal macrophages. Urate cryst...

In this work, we used the co-precipitation method to synthesize hydroxyapatite (Mn-SeO3-HA) containing both selenium IV (approximately 3.60 wt.%) and manganese II (approximately 0.29 wt.%). Pure hydroxyapatite (HA), hydroxyapatite-containing manganese (II) ions (Mn-HA), and hydroxyapatite-containing selenite ions alone (SeO3-HA), prepared with the same method, were used as reference materials. ...

We evaluated the use of hydroxyapatite blocks as spacers in pelvic osteotomy. The hydroxyapatite blocks fused with autologous bone tissue within 10 months and were highly biocompatible even after 10 years. They prevent pelvic deformities and are as effective as autogenous bone grafts.

A physical model which assumes that hydroxyapatite is the thermodynamic governing phase for the acid dissolution-rate behavior of enamel has been critically examined theoretically and experimentally. Both enamel powder and synthetic hydroxyapatite initial dissolution-rate experiments were conducted under various conditions of acid-butler type and concentration, pH, and common ion concentrations.
