This article investigates languages generated by insertiondeletion systems that insert or delete one symbol using only a left context. We show that if the context of insertion or deletion is greater than one, then the corresponding families are all equal to each other and properly include the family of regular languages. We also show that the obtained family contains non-context-free languages.

Several characterizations of recursively enumerable (RE) languages are presented, using insertion-deletion systems. Such a system generates the elements of a language by inserting and deleting words, according to their contexts (the insertiondeletion rules are triples (u, z, v), with the meaning that z can be inserted or deleted in/from the context (u, v)). Grammars based on insertion rules wer...

The proposed research program addresses a key signal processing issue for BPMR, i.e., the correction of written-in errors introduced by the BPMR channel. To this end, we will investigate concatenated coding schemes for an insertiondeletion-substitution (IDS) channel that models the residual write errors that the channel decoder sees after the detection phase in a BPMR system. Our concatenated c...

One of the greatest promises of modern genetics is the ability to identify loci responsible for, or at least highly correlated with, important physical traits and disease susceptibility. This will enable benefits ranging from improved disease risk assessment and crop design to ultimately a better understanding of how genotype variation effects variations in phenotypes. A key component in this t...

We present many new results related to reliable (interactive) communication over insertiondeletion channels. Synchronization errors, such as insertions and deletions, strictly generalize the usual symbol corruption errors and are much harder to protect against. We show how to hide the complications of synchronization errors in many applications by introducing very general channel simulations wh...

The induction and regulation of broodiness is of the most important role of prolactin in avian species. The promoter region of the prolactin gene is an appropriate model for studying tissue-specific andhormonally-regulated activation of gene transcription. In this study, the association between prolactinpromoter region alleles and egg production in Fars native chickens was investigated. In total...

The present thesis considers the problems of computational completeness and universality for several biologically-inspired models of computation: insertion-deletion systems, networks of evolutionary processors, and multiset rewriting systems. The presented results fall into two major categories: study of expressive power of the operations of insertion and deletion with and without control, and ...
