A method has been developed to create vertically aligned carbon nanotube (VACNT) thermal interface materials that can be attached to a variety of metallized surfaces. VACNT films were grown on Si substrates using standard CVD processing followed by metallization using Ti/Au. The coated CNTs were then bonded to metallized substrates at 220 °C. By reducing the adhesion of the VACNTs to the growth...

We found that the optimized mixture of graphene and multilayer graphene, produced by the high-yield inexpensive liquid-phase-exfoliation technique, can lead to an extremely strong enhancement of the cross-plane thermal conductivity K of the composite. The "laser flash" measurements revealed a record-high enhancement of K by 2300% in the graphene-based polymer at the filler loading fraction f = ...

The electrical compensation effect of the nitrogen incorporation at the SiO2/4H-SiC (p-type) interface after thermal treatments in ambient N2O is investigated employing both scanning spreading resistance microscopy (SSRM) and scanning capacitance microscopy (SCM). SSRM measurements on p-type 4H-SiC areas selectively exposed to N2O at 1150 °C showed an increased resistance compared to the unexpo...

This paper presents a PC-based PCR thermal cycler with a host-local architecture, where a PC is employed as the host. The local system only executes the thermal cycling process and the PC is responsible for the management of PCR protocols with a convenient GUI. The presented host-local system greatly reduces the development time and the maintenance cost, providing an economical PCR thermal cycler.

Thermal rectification is a physical phenomenon where the resistance to heat flow is dependent on the sign of the temperature difference across a solid. This effect could be a useful phenomena to many industries if it could be controlled and optimized. However, experimental evidence shows that thermal rectification is dependent on a large number of competing factors. In addition, theoretical mod...

This paper reports novel methods for accelerated ageing tests, with comparative reliability between them for stresses applied on power RF LDMOS: Thermal Shock Tests (TST), Thermal Cycling Tests (TCT), High Voltage Drain (HVD) and coupling thermal and electrical effects under various conditions. The investigation findings obtained after various ageing tests show the degradation and the device’s ...

By taking advantage of design and construction of strong graphene-matrix interfaces, we have prepared modified graphene/polyimide (MG/PI) nanocomposites via a two-stage process consisting of (a) surface modification of graphene and (b) in situ polymerization. The 2 wt % MG/PI nanocomposites exhibited a 20-fold increase in wear resistance and a 12% reduction in friction coefficient, constituting...

The formation of a uniform, high tensile stress and low silicide/Si interfacial resistance nickel silicide in nMOSFET by introducing pulsed laser annealing (PLA) is reported. This annealing approach facilitated the phase transformation of nickel silicide to Si-rich NiSix compounds using a low-thermal-budget process, improves the silicide/Si interface regularity and avoids familiar (111) NiSi2 f...

The cooling dynamics of glass-embedded noble metal nanoparticles with diameters ranging from 4 to 26 nm were studied using ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy. Measurements were performed probing away from the surface plasmon resonance of the nanoparticles to avoid spurious effects due to glass heating around the particle. In these conditions, the time-domain data reflect the cooling kinetics of ...

Thermal interfacematerials (TIMs) are crucial components of high density electronics and the high thermal conductivity of graphite makes this material an attractive candidate for such applications. We report an investigation of the in-plane and through-plane electrical and thermal conductivities of thin thermal interface layers of graphite nanoplatelet (GNP) based composites. The in-plane elect...
