OBJECTIVE To assess the effect of captopril, an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, on the metabolism of chylomicrons and their remnants and the possible alterations in the concentrations of plasma lipids caused by the drug in hypertensive hypercholesterolemic individuals. METHODS The metabolism of chylomicrons was tested with the method of artificial lipid emulsion of chylomicrons label...

The growing worldwide prevalence of food allergies is drawing attention to the risk of allergenic proteins found in intravenous medicinal products, particularly anaesthetics. Propofol induced anaphylaxis has been described. The presence of soybean oil and egg lecithins in the lipid emulsion highlights their suspected responsibility in certain cases. We report a case of anaphylaxis to propofol i...

AIM Conventional soybean lipid emulsions contain no docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) or arachidonic acid (AA). We investigated the relationship between blood DHA and AA status in 27 very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants with or without parenteral lipid emulsion. METHODS Sixteen infants received parenteral lipid emulsion, and 11 infants were control group. The fatty acid composition of the erythrocyt...

Abstract An 18‐month‐old male neutered Cocker Spaniel presented with a comatose mentation to its primary care veterinarian following the presumed ingestion of 216 mg/kg phenobarbitone 2 hours prior. Following failure improve intravenous fluids, lipid emulsion therapy, and supportive care, patient was then referred tertiary referral centre for further treatment 30 ingestion. Mechanical ventilati...

BACKGROUND Lipid emulsion infusion reverses cardiovascular compromise due to local anesthetic overdose in laboratory and clinical settings. The authors compared resuscitation with lipid, epinephrine, and saline control in a rat model of bupivacaine-induced cardiac toxicity to determine whether lipid provides a benefit over epinephrine. METHODS Bupivacaine, 20 mg/kg, was infused in rats anesth...

Acute elevation of circulating lipids, such as the postprandial state, contributes to increased cardiovascular risk. However, the effect of acutely elevated triglycerides on arterial and left ventricular function is not completely understood. We aimed to assess whether an acute increase in triglycerides affects ventricular-vascular interaction. Fifteen healthy men (age, 49 ± 8 yr) underwent bli...

alpha-Lobeline inhibits d-amphetamine-evoked dopamine release from striatal slices in vitro, appearing to reduce the cytosolic pool of dopamine available for reverse transport by the dopamine transporter. Based on this neurochemical mechanism of action, the present study determined if lobeline decreases d-methamphetamine self-administration. Rats were surgically implanted with jugular catheters...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Compare hemodynamic changes after ropivacaine-induced toxicity followed by treatment with two lipid emulsions in swine. METHODS Large White pigs were anesthetized with thiopental, followed by intubation, and kept on mechanical ventilation. Hemodynamic variables at rest were recorded with invasive pressure monitoring and pulmonary artery catheterization. After 30 minut...

Amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) is a rare and often fatal complication that occurs in the peripartum period. We present a patient with an AFE who developed disseminated intravascular coagulation and cardiovascular collapse who may have benefitted from intravascular lipid emulsion rescue. This is the first published case in which lipid emulsion was a part of the successful treatment of AFE.
