A collection of typical examples shows the exotic behaviour of numerical methods when applied to singular perturbation problems. While standard meshes are used in the first six examples, even on layer-adapted meshes several surprising phenomena are shown to occur. AMS subject classification (2000): 35 L10, 35 L12, 35 L60

The relative accessibility of rat liver ribosomal proteins to reductive methylation was examined using ribosomes with unphosphorylated, and extensively phosphorylated S6. Comparison of the results indicated that proteins S3, S4, S7, and S23/24 of the small subunit, and proteins L9, L10, L12, L18, L27, L34, and L36 are involved in a ribosomal conformational change.

Magnetic nanoparticles and thin films exhibiting a large magnetic anisotropy energy density (MAE) have attracted enormous attention over the last years due to their potential use in magnetic data storage or sensing applications. FePt alloy nanoparticles and films have a huge MAE in the chemically ordered L10 phase. This ordered phase is typically obtained by annealing the as-prepared chemically...

Abstract Lactation taxes mothers’ bone health, causing them to lose up 10% of their mass for milk calcium. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressants (SSRIs) are commonly used during pregnancy and lactation but independently decrease mass. We previously demonstrated that both maternal offspring densities were compromised by treatment with the SSRI fluoxetine throughout lactation. In...

In this commentary, Philip Hieter and Kym Boycott discuss the importance of model organisms for understanding pathogenesis of rare human genetic diseases, and highlight the work of Brooks et al., "Dysfunction of 60S ribosomal protein L10 (RPL10) disrupts neurodevelopment and causes X-linked microcephaly in humans," published in this issue of GENETICS.

BACKGROUND Benchmark dose (BMD) modeling computes the dose associated with a prespecified response level. While offering advantages over traditional points of departure (PODs), such as no-observed-adverse-effect-levels (NOAELs), BMD methods have lacked consistency and transparency in application, interpretation, and reporting in human health assessments of chemicals. OBJECTIVES We aimed to ap...

We introduce and justify a taxonomy for the structure of markets and minimal institutions which appear in constructing minimally complex trading structures to perform the functions of price formation, settlement and payments. Each structure is presented as a playable strategic market game and is examined for its efficiency, the number of degrees of freedom and the symmetry properties of the str...

This paper examines the empirical validity of a model of homogeneous input demand under price uncertainty in which firms trade off expected input cost against its variability (risk) in selecting the optimal input supplier mix. Using recent work in time-series econometrics, this model is applied to the Japanese steam-coal import market, where five suppliers compete: China, the Soviet Union, Sout...
