Nanodiamond in a 2-5-nm size interval (which is typical for an appearance of quantum confinement effect) show Raman spectra composed of 3 bands at 1325, 1600, and 1500 cm-1 (at the 458-nm laser excitation) which shifts to 1630 cm-1 at the 257-nm laser excitation. Contrary to sp2-bonded carbon, relative intensities of the bands do not depend on the 458- and 257-nm excitation wavelengths, and a h...

Monte Carlo method is used to simulate photo-Dember effect and generation of electromagnetic terahertz pulses in n-InAs excited by femtosecond laser radiation. Dynamics of electric field and transport of carriers were considered self-consistently. It is shown that, under excitation of semiconductor by laser pulses with photon energies < 1.1 eV, the Dember photovoltage reaches a peak value (it c...

Standing-wave excitation of fluorescence is highly desirable in optical microscopy because it improves the axial resolution. We demonstrate here that multiplanar excitation of fluorescence by a standing wave can be produced in a single-spot laser scanning microscope by placing a plane reflector close to the specimen. We report here a variation in the intensity of fluorescence of successive plan...

We have observed phase singularities due to vortex excitation in Bose-Einstein condensates. Vortices were created by moving a laser beam through a condensate. They were observed as dislocations in the interference fringes formed by the stirred condensate and a second unperturbed condensate. The velocity dependence for vortex excitation and the time scale for re-establishing a uniform phase acro...

Fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) has previously been shown to provide contrast between normal and diseased tissue. Here we present progress towards clinical and preclinical FLIM endoscopy of tissue autofluorescence, demonstrating a flexible wide-field endoscope that utilised a low average power blue picosecond laser diode excitation source and was able to acquire ∼mm-scale spatial maps of a...

A possibility of the two-photon excitation of an isomeric state in a nucleus of thorium-229 has been discussed. The fluorescence intensity of the excitation is demonstrated to be identical for the irradiation of nuclei with either monochromatic light or polychromatic radiation consisting of a sequence of short light pulses of the same intensity. The two-photon excitation of Th3+ ion in an elect...

Electrochemical charging has been applied to study the influence of doping on the intensity of the various Raman features observed in chemical vapor-deposition-grown graphene. Three different laser excitation energies have been used to probe the influence of the excitation energy on the behavior of both the G and G' modes regarding their dependence on doping. The intensities of both the G and G...

Laser-induced fluorescence and excitation spectra of formaldehyde in the A-X 4(1)(0) band at 370 nm are recorded in the primary flame front of a Bunsen flame. An examination of partition functions shows that this excitation can minimize temperature bias for formaldehyde in situ diagnostic measurements.

In recent studies, an optically pumped Ar*/He laser has been demonstrated using the Ar 4p[1/2]1→4s[3/2]2 transition at 912.55 nm. Time-resolved data for this system, recorded using CW laser excitation and pulsed discharge production of Ar* 4p[3/2]2, yielded laser output pulses that were of unexpectedly short duration. It was speculated that radiative relaxation from the upper laser level to the...
