PURPOSE One of the most frequent complications related to dental implants is peri-implantitis, and the characteristics of implant surfaces are closely related to the progression and resolution of inflammation. Therefore, a technical modality that can effectively detoxify the implant surface without modification to the surface is needed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of er...

PURPOSE Using a noncontact erbium (Er):yttrium--aluminium--garnet (YAG) laser, ablation of vitreous was compared to distilled water in vitro. METHODS The porcine vitreous body and distilled water were ablated in vitro at different pulse lengths and pulse energies. Selected pulse energies were 25, 35, 45, 75, and 100 mJ (pulse rate: 1 Hz; laser beam diameter at the surface of the sample: 2 mm)...

The generation of an ultrashort relativistic electron bunch from a strong laser-plasma interaction have been studied by particle-in-cell simulations and observed experimentally. The electron beam was generated from the plasma created by focusing a Ti: sapphire 12 TW (tera watt) laser pulse at the edge of helium gas jet expanded into the vacuum from a pulsed supersonic nozzle. The laser pulse du...

A high-average power, laser-diode-pumped, picosecond-pulse regenerative chirped pulse amplifier was developed by using the thin-rod Yb:YAG laser architecture. An average output power of 20 W was achieved at a repetition rate of 100 kHz with an output pulse width of 2 ps. 2008 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (140.3280) Lasers, amplifiers, (140.3615) Lasers, ytterbium, (140.3480) Lasers, ...

We present a model that elucidates the physics underlying the generation of an electromagnetic pulse from a femtosecond laser induced plasma channel. The radiation pressure force from the laser pulse spatially separates the ionized electrons from the heavier ions and the induced dipole moment subsequently oscillates at the plasma frequency and radiates an electromagnetic pulse.

Pulse shaping is a techniqueused to temporally distribute energywithin a single laser pulse. This provides the user an added degree of control over the heat delivered to the laser material interaction zone. Pulses that induce a gradual heating or a prolonged cooling effect can be generated with peak power/pulse

Broadening the ultrashort laser pulse in a Kerr-lens mode-locked laser by net positive round-trip group-delay dispersion has proven to be a powerful concept for scaling the pulse energy directly achievable with a femtosecond laser oscillator without external amplification. Drawing on this concept, we demonstrate here Ti : Sa chirped-pulse oscillators delivering sub-40 fs pulses of 0.5μJ and 50 ...

In order to avoid laser-induced damage to optical components during amplification of a short laser pulse, the pulse often is first stretched in time to reduce its peak power, amplified, and then recompressed. High peak irradiance is attained when the laser beam is subsequently focused onto a laser fusion target. In a laser system, currently under construction, large diffraction gratings will be...

A stretched-pulse fiber laser with a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) that produces 100-fs pulses with 1-nJ energy is demonstrated. These results constitute a 30-fold increase in pulse energy over previously reported femtosecond fiber lasers with a NOLM. Compared with previous stretched-pulse lasers, this laser offers a cleaner spectrum and improved stability, with comparable pulse duration...
