A set of 83 lytic dairy bacteriophages (phages) infecting flavor-producing mesophilic starter strains of the Leuconostoc genus was characterized, and the first in-depth taxonomic scheme was established for this phage group. Phages were obtained from different sources, i.e., from dairy samples originating from 11 German dairies (50 Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides [Ln. pseudomesenteroides] phages...

The Leuconostoc species require sucrose in the culture medium as an inducer for the elaboration of glucosyltransferase (GTF) and glucans. Among all the reported putification methods, polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a effective and single step purification method for GTF from Leuconostoc mesenteroides. The extracellular GTFs from Leuconostoc mesenteroides L.m.28 and mutant Leuconostoc mesenteroides...

the lactic acid bacteria in 9 samples of the fermented camel milk, chal, taken from rural area and retail markets were identified on the basis of their physiological and morphological properties. from the samples, 93 lab species including, 64 bacillus (68.8%), 8 cocci 8.6%), 11 coccobacillus (11.83%), 2 streptococcus (2.15%) and 8 tetrade (8.6%) were identified. among the lactobacillus species,...

In previous reports from this laboratory, a method for the assay of Dand L-methionine in biologic fluids with Leuconostoc mesenteroides P-60 and Lactobacillus fermenti 36 has been described (1, 2). The present communication describes a method for the determination of cysteine plus cystine in plasma. In a report by other workers, using the medium of Dunn et al. (3), the organisms Lactobacillus b...

Shelton, Damon C. (West Virginia University Medical Center, Morgantown), and William E. Nutter. Uptake of valine and glycylvaline by Leuconostoc mesenteroides. J. Bacteriol. 88:1175-1184. 1964.-Uptake systems for valine and glycylvaline were studied in growing cultures and non-growing cellular suspensions of Leuconostoc mesenteroides. Glycylvaline promoted growth more rapidly than did valine. O...

Leuconostoc species are emerging pathogens that can cause severe infections, particularly in immunocompromised patients. Using molecular methods, we identified Leuconostoc mesenteroides as the cause of a brain abscess which was successfully treated by surgery and antimicrobial treatment. This is the first report of brain abscess caused by this species.

A case of meningitis in a neonate caused by vancomycin-resistant Leuconostoc mesenteroides is presented. This case was complicated by severe ventriculitis and was ultimately fatal. Infection with Leuconostoc spp. is rare but should be suspected when vancomycin-resistant organisms resembling streptococci are isolated. Previous reports of this infection are reviewed.

Citrate metabolism in the lactic acid bacterium Leuconostoc mesenteroides generates an electrochemical proton gradient across the membrane by a secondary mechanism (C. Marty-Teysset, C. Posthuma, J. S. Lolkema, P. Schmitt, C. Divies, and W. N. Konings, J. Bacteriol. 178:2178-2185, 1996). Reports on the energetics of citrate metabolism in the related organism Lactococcus lactis are contradictory...

Leuconostoc mesenteroides is a lactic acid bacterium (LAB) commonly associated with fermented foods. Here, we report the genome sequence of three selected dairy strains, showing atypical antibiotic resistances (AR). Genome analysis provided a better understanding of the genetic bases of AR in Leuconostoc and its potential transferability among foodborne bacteria.
