Cells of Porphyridium cruentum were grown in different colors of light which would be absorbed primarily by chlorophyll (Chl) (red and blue light) or by the phycobilisomes (green or two intensities of cool-white fluorescent light), and samples of these cells were frozen to -196 C for measurements of absorption and fluorescence emission spectra. Cells grown in the high intensity white light had ...

In tobacco mutants which contain 1/8 to 1/30 of the normal chlorophyll content per leaf area the content of yellow pigments (carotenoids) is also diminished but less in proportion to the chlorophyll content. The pale yellow-green mutant grows and matures provided that light intensity and temperature make up for the chlorophyll deficiency. In most green plants and algae light saturation of photo...

Microgreens are an excellent source of health-maintaining compounds, and the accumulation of these compounds in plant tissues may be stimulated by exogenous stimuli. While light quality effects on green basil microgreens are known, the present paper aims at improving the quality of acyanic (green) and cyanic (red) basil microgreens with different ratios of LED blue and red illumination. Growth,...

Acquisition of new photosynthetic pigments has been a crucial process for the evolution of photosynthesis and photosynthetic organisms. In this process, pigment-binding proteins must evolve to fit new pigments. Prochlorococcus is a unique photosynthetic organism that uses divinyl chlorophyll (DVChl) instead of monovinyl chlorophyll (MVChl). However, cyanobacterial mutants that accumulate DVChl ...

rabbitfish is economically valuable teleost species which lives in shallow coastalwaters. two species of rabbit fish have been recognized in southern sea of iran (persiangulf) as namely siganus sutor and siganus javus. in the current study, in order toinvestigate the histology of the annular ligament of the s. javus’ eye, the prepared sectionsof the eyes of twelve healthy specimens were studied...

The entire range of human color perception, in all its vibrancy, is due to the operation of just three types of photosensitive retinal cone cells and the neural mechanisms responsible for interpreting their signals. These cone cells contain photosensitive opsin pigments that preferentially absorb light at different wavelengths. The short-wavelength (S) pigment has peak absorption of light at ab...

The daily light-dark (LD) cycle exerts a powerful influence on the temporal organization of behavior and physiology. Much of this influence is preserved in behaviorally blind retinally degenerate mice; the photoreceptors underlying this nonvisual phototransduction are unknown. The mammalian eye contains at least two classes of photoactive pigments, the vitamin A-based opsins and the vitamin B(2...

Using only 11-cis 3, 4-dehydroretinal as a chromophore in the pure-cone retina, American chameleon (Anolis carolinensis) detects a wide range of color from ultraviolet (UV) to infrared. We previously characterized its visual opsin genes sws1Ac, sws2Ac, rh1Ac, rh2Ac, and LwsAc that encode SWS1Ac, SWS2Ac, RH1Ac, RH2Ac, and LWSAc opsins, respectively, and the pineal gland-specific opsin (PAc) gene...

Photosynthetic pigments are bioactive compounds of great importance for the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. They are not only responsible for capturing solar energy to carry out photosynthesis, but also play a role in photoprotective processes and display antioxidant activity, all of which contribute to effective biomass and oxygen production. Diatoms are organisms of a distinct ...

The potential of lecithin BLM with chlorophyll a and with and without carotene has been measured. The BLM containing both chlorophyll a and carotene have shown the highest value of the photopotential. Stronger fatigue effect during light puis excitation has been found on BLM with pigments than with isolated chlorophyll a-protein complex extracted from blue green alga.
