In this paper we reveal the connection and equivalence of three sparse linear discriminant analysis methods: the `1-Fisher’s discriminant analysis proposed in Wu et al. (2008), the sparse optimal scoring proposed in Clemmensen et al. (2011) and the direct sparse discriminant analysis proposed in Mai et al. (2012). It is shown that, for any sequence of penalization parameters, the normalized sol...

Extra information is often readily available but not utilized in a classification paradigm. Here we explore using extra labels (profile faces and rotated faces) to aid in distinguishing faces versus non-faces. We propose a way to combine simple discriminant classifiers to build a more complex ones and justify the combination in a probabilistic setting.

This paper proposes a scale invariant face detection method which combines higher-order local autocorrela-tion (HLAC) features extracted from a log-polar transformed image with Linear Discriminant Analysis for \face" and \not face" classiication. Since HLAC features of log-polar image are sensitive to shifts of a face, we utilize this property and develop a face detection method. HLAC features ...

The objective of this study is to identify the factors that will make e-commerce adoption a sustainable one in a developing country like India. Using secondary research, variables that influence decision for e-commerce adoption were determined. Then using primary research, these variables were tested in different small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Odisha, India. Data from 50 organizations w...

The worldwide population is aging. With a larger population of elderly people, the numbers of people affected by cognitive impairment such as Alzheimer’s disease are growing. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for Alzheimer’s disease. The only way to alleviate it’s serious effects is to start therapy very early before the disease has wrought too much irreversible damage. Current diagnostic p...

This paper presents a novel approach to scribblebased image colorization. In the work reported here we have explored how to exploit the textural information to improve this process. For every scribbled image we extract the most discriminative features using linear discriminant analysis (LDA). After that, the whole image is projected onto a discriminative textural feature space. Our main contrib...

We develop a proximity function between an individual and a population from a distance between multivariate observations. We study some properties of this construction and apply it to a distance{based discrimination rule, which contains the classic linear discriminant function as a particular case. Additionally, this rule can be used advantageously for categorical or mixed variables, or in prob...

The use of a small number of Electromyography (EMG) channels for classifying the finger movement is a challenging task. This paper proposes the recognition system for decoding the individual and combined finger movements using two channels surface EMG. The proposed system utilizes Spectral Regression Discriminant Analysis (SRDA) for dimensionality reduction, Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) for c...

In this study we attempt to answer two questions: Is there a natural way to classify projects and what are the specific factors that influence the success of various kinds of projects? Perhaps one of the major barriers to understanding the reasons behind the success of a project has been the lack of specificity of constructs applied in project management studies. Many studies of project success...

Formant trajectories have been shown to convey a great deal of speaker-specific information and their speaker-discriminatory potential has been quantified using Linear Discriminant Analysis on laboratory material [16]. This study tests the applicability of LDA on three sets of real-case forensic recordings. Given the limitations of LDA, we used the actual formant trajectory values (F1–F3) and c...
