We present an overview of an English-to-Czech machine translation system. The system relies on transfer at the tectogrammatical (deep syntactic) layer of the language description. We report on the progress of linguistic annotation of English tectogrammatical layer and also on first end-to-end evaluation of our syntax-based MT system.

This study presents a new hybrid approach for translation equivalent selection within a transfer-based machine translation system using an intertwined net of traditional linguistic methods together with statistical techniques. Detailed evaluation reveals that the translation quality can be improved substantially in this way.

We present a system for manipulating a wide class of linguistic diagrams, which is configurable and extensible, and allows deployment as a web-delivered system. A major theme of this work is the transfer of the devices of lbrmal grammar into the analysis and construction of diagrams.
