When a laminate of a thin metal film on a tough polymer substrate is stretched, the metal film may rupture at strains ranging from a few percent to a few tens of percent. This variation in the ductility of the metal film is modulated by the adhesion of the metal/polymer interface. To study this modulation, here we use the finite element method to simulate the co-evolution of two processes: debo...

Galileo stereo images covering about 1500 km 2 of Uruk Sulcus on Ganymede have revealed two scales of ridges; (1) large-scale ridges and troughs spaced -6 km apart, corresponding to the "grooves" seen in Voyager images, and (2) small-scale ridges spaced hundreds of meters apart superimposed on the large-scale ridges. We interpret the small-scale ridges to be the result of tilt-block normal faul...

The DC electropolishing process has been applied to the sharpening of tungsten wires in 2 M KOH aqueous solution. Necking of tungsten anodes takes place in the vicinity of the electrolyte-air interface. This results in the creation of two separate wire parts with nanosharp tips. Using image analysis, we demonstrate that the products of electrochemical reactions on the wire surface form a film w...

A combination of fractographic and metallographic analysis during tensile tests over the temperature ranging from 20 °C to 750 were carried out investigate fracture behaviors deformation modes so as clarify dependence mechanical properties AISI 316 austenitic stainless steel. Planar slip mode was observed at due a relatively low SFE (stacking fault energies). Pronounced planar characteristics i...

The purpose of this investigation is to examine the viability of using the sheet metal for forming applications. Forming limit diagram (FLD) composed of negative and positive minor strain with respect to major strain which occurs at directional zero strain with the critical thickness of sheet metal. The negative minor strain region of FLD is predicted by localized necking. However there is no d...

We apply continuum mechanical based, numerical modeling to study the dynamics of extended monodisperse polymer melts during the relaxation. The computations are within the ideas of the microstructural "interchain pressure" theory. The computations show a delayed necking resulting in a rupture, as a result of small initial sample imperfections. These ruptures agree with experimental observations.

Strength and ductility are two of the most important mechanical properties of structural materials. However, they are often mutually exclusive, i.e., a material may be strong or ductile, but rarely both at the same time. This is also true for bulk nanostructured materials, which usually have high strength, but disappointingly low ductility. Bulk nanostructured materials are usually synthesized ...
