The embedding of a manifold M into a Hilbert-space H induces, via the pull-back, a tensor field on M out of the Hermitian tensor on H. We propose a general procedure to compute these tensors in particular for manifolds admitting a Lie-group structure.

We previously demonstrated that nonfatiguing rhythmic forearm exercise at 25% maximal voluntary contraction (12 2-s contractions/min) evokes sympathoexcitation without significant engagement of metabolite-sensitive muscle afferents (B.A. Batman, J.C. Hardy, U.A. Leuenberger, M.B. Smith, Q.X. Yang and L.I. Sinoway. J. Appl. Physiol. 76: 1077-1081, 1994). This is in contrast to the sympathetic ne...

In a complete Riemannian manifold (M,g) if the hessian of a real valued function satisfies some suitable conditions then it restricts the geometry of (M,g). In this paper we characterize all compact rank-1 symmetric spaces, as those Riemannian manifolds (M,g) admitting a real valued function u such that the hessian of u has atmost two eigenvalues −u and − 2 , under some mild hypothesis on (M,g)...

We tested the hypothesis that static contraction causes greater reflex cardiovascular responses than dynamic contraction at equivalent workloads [i.e., same tension-time index (TTI), holding either contraction time or peak tension constant] in chloralose-anesthetized cats. When time was held constant and tension was allowed to vary, dynamic contraction of the hindlimb muscles evoked greater inc...

To study the roles of phosphodiesterase (PDE) 4 in the human airways, we examined the effect of the novel PDE4 inhibitor T-440 in the isolated human bronchus. T-440 inhibited PDE4 extracted from human bronchial smooth muscle. IC50 values for the effect of T-440, rolipram (a PDE4 inhibitor) and theophylline on PDE4 activity of the bronchial tissues were 0.08 microM, 2 microM and > 100 microM, re...

Many of the known ovoids and spreads of finite polar spaces admit a transitive group of collineations, and in 1988, P. Kleidman classified the ovoids admitting a 2-transitive group. A. Gunawardena has recently extended this classification by determining the ovoids of the seven-dimensional hyperbolic quadric which admit a primitive group. In this paper we classify the ovoids and spreads of finit...

Although muscarinic receptors are known to mediate tonic contraction of human gastrointestinal tract smooth muscle, the receptor subtypes that mediate the tonic contractions are not entirely clear. Whole human stomachs with attached esophagus were procured from organ transplant donors. Cholinergic contractile responses of clasp, sling, lower esophageal circular (LEC), midesophageal circular (ME...

Mechanical force or mechanical stress modulates intracellular signal pathways, including the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAP kinase) cascades. In our system, cell stretching activated and cell contraction inactivated all three MAP kinase pathways (MKK1/2-extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), MKK4 (SEK1)-cJun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and MKK3/6-p38 pathways). However, little is known...
