Next-generation wavelength routing optical networks requiring optical cross connects (OXC) in the network have the ability to direct optical signals from any input interface to suitable output interfaces by configuring their internal embedded optical switch matrices. Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) switches are regarded as the most promising technology to achieve such functionality. We co...

In this study, both full 3D electromagnetic and equivalent circuit modelling of a radio frequency microelectromechanical systems (RF MEMS) single-pole eight-throw rotary switch are reported for the first time. Excellent agreement has been achieved between measurements and modelled performance for frequencies up to 12 GHz. In order to validate the effectiveness of the modelling, a 2-bit true tim...

A novel test facility for the efficient evaluation of microelectromechanical system (MEMS) switches and the development of alternative contact materials is described. The facility utilizes the upper cantilever from commercial MEMS contact switches, and tests these against alternative bottom contact materials within a modified atomic force microscope (AFM). The test closely approximates the real...

a new output structure for class e power amplifier (pa) is proposed in this paper. a series lc resonator circuit, tuned near the second harmonic of the operating frequency is added to the output circuit. this resonator causes low impedance at the second harmonic. the output circuit is designed to shape the switch voltage of the class e amplifier and lower the voltage stress of the transistor. t...

We built and evaluated a hybrid electrical-packet/optical-circuit network for datacenters using a 10 μs optical circuit switch using wavelength-selective switches based on binary MEMs. This network has the potential to support large-scale, dynamic datacenter workloads. © 2013 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: 060.4250, 060.4253,060.6718.

In this paper, we present three hierarchical multiscale architectures that are interconnected electrooptically at micro-scale level and via spin waves at nanoscale level. These architectures are derived from the Optical Reconfigurable Mesh (ORM), which is a MEMS architecture that supports several types of electrical and optical routings. The first multi-scale architecture presented here is a st...

This paper presents the design and implementation of a reconfigurable reflectarray element design using commercially available RF MEMS switches. This reconfigurablity allows for dynamic control of individual radiating elements by electronically manipulating the switch configuration. The reflectarray element chosen here consists of a microstrip patch on the top surface with a slot in the ground ...

The present work investigates the results of different characterization methods for the dielectric charging phenomenon applicable to metal–insulator–metal (MIM) capacitors and electrostatically actuated microelectro-mechanical-systems (MEMS). The discharge current transients (DCT), thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) assessment methods hav...

An overview of the MEMS technology development and applications is given in this paper. A special attention is paid to the RF MEMS switches. Both series and shunt MEMS switches have been considered. It is also presented a technique for modeling and design of inductively-tuned MEMS shunt switch. Some very important issues for the device maturity e.g. reliability and packaging have been addressed.
