This report describes a simulation model of sonar tracking, developed to explore the effect of networking sonars on tracking performance. The tracker is an extended Kalman filter with data association by nearest-neighbour in Mahalanobis distance. Data fusion algorithms also use Mahalanobis distance. Simulation outputs have been verified against analytical results where possible.

Emotion identification is beginning to be considered as an essential feature in human-computer interaction. However, most of the studies are mainly focused on facial expression classifications and speech recognition and not much attention has been paid until recently to physiological pattern recognition. In this paper, an integrative approach is proposed to emotional interaction by fusing multi...

This paper proposes a general system approach applicable to the automatic inspection of textured material. First, the input image is preprocessed in order to be independent of acquisition non-uniformities. A tone-to-texture transform is then performed by mapping the original grey level picture on a multivariate local feature sequence, which turns out to be normally distributed. More specificall...

BACKGROUND Comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) is a relatively new molecular cytogenetic method that detects chromosomal imbalances. Automatic karyotyping is an important step in CGH analysis because the precise position of the chromosome abnormality must be located and manual karyotyping is tedious and time-consuming. In the past, computer-aided karyotyping was done by using the 4',6-diami...

An automatic classification scheme of on-line handwritten signatures is presented. A Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) with a hidden layer is used as classifier, and two different signature classes are considered, namely: legible and non-legible name. Signatures are represented considering different feature subsets obtained from global information. Mahalanobis distance is used to rank the parameters ...

In this paper, face recognition technique using Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) is proposed. The local information of the face is extracted using block-based (DCT). The coefficients selected in each DCT block are fused to generate the feature image. This feature image is used for classification process. The face, recognition is then performed using Mahalanobis distance. The advantage of this te...

The use of the Mahalanobis distance in a lookup table approach to retrieval of in-water Inherent Optical Properties (IOPs) led to significant improvements in the accuracy of the retrieved IOPs, as high as 50% in some cases, with an average improvement of 20% over a wide range of case II waters. Previous studies have shown that inherent noise in hyperspectral data can cause significant errors in...

In this paper, we compare the effectiveness of basic acoustic features and genre annotations when adapting a music similarity model to user ratings. We use the Metric Learning to Rank algorithm to learn a Mahalanobis metric from comparative similarity ratings in in the MagnaTagATune database. Using common formats for feature data, our approach can easily be transferred to other existing databas...
