This paper describes AutoClass H, a program for automatically discovering (inducing) classes from a database, based on a Bayesian statistical technique which automatically determines the most probable number of classes, their probabilistic descriptions, and the probability that each object is a member of each class. AutoClass has been tested on several large, real databases and has discovered p...

Since millions seek health information online, it is vital for this information to be comprehensible. Most studies use readability formulas, which ignore vocabulary, and conclude that online health information is too difficult. We developed a vocabularly-based, naïve Bayes classi fier to distinguish between three difficulty levels in text. It proved 98% accurate in a 250-document evaluation. W...

While Naı̈ve Bayes classifier (NB) is Bayes-optimal for independent features, we prove that it is also optimal for two equiprobable classes and two features with equal class-conditional covariances. Although strict optimality does not extend for three features, equal covariances are expected to be beneficial in higher-dimensional spaces. 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The context for the work we report here is the automatic description of spatial relationships between pairs of objects in images. We investigate the task of selecting prepositions for such spatial relationships. We describe the two datasets of object pairs and prepositions we have created for English and French, and report results for predicting prepositions for object pairs in both of these la...

In the context of adaptive nonparametric curve estimation a common assumption is that a function (signal) to estimate belongs to a nested family of functional classes. These classes are often parametrized by a quantity representing the smoothness of the signal. It has already been realized by many that the problem of estimating the smoothness is not sensible. What can then be inferred about the...
