The patient was a 16-year-old girl. She noticed gradual increase in the size of skin mass on right posterior neck and observed redness 1 month prior to visiting our department. 4 cm size, dome-shaped, side neck. Ultrasound images showed well-defined oval heterogeneous isoechoic mass. interior rich blood flow with some coarse calcifications. Magnetic resonance imaging uniform hypointensity T1-we...
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) is a noninvasive imaging technique allowing some degree of tissue characterization by showing and quantifying molecular diffusion. Cell size, density and integrity influence the signal intensity seen on diffusion-weighted images. A number of recent reports suggest that this technique may have interesting applications in the evaluation of head and n...
Malignant carotid body tumors are rare neoplasms which originate from the chemoreceptor cells at the carotid bifurcation. A 61-year-old man presented with a neck mass which was diagnosed as a malignant carotid body tumor. Surgical resection of the mass with accompanying lymph nodes was performed. No evidence for local recurrence or distant metastasis were detected during the follow-up period.
Background. Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) of the head and neck are rare aggressive neoplasms with a poor prognosis. This study describes the management and outcomes of 3 of our patients with MPNSTs of the head and neck. Methods. We identified 3 patients presenting with MPNST of the head and neck and treated at the University of North Carolina. We compared our results to the ...
Etiologies for neck pain are multiple but those associated with dysphagia remain limited to retropharyngeal abscess, soft tissue swellings, trauma, oro-pharyngeal neoplasms and acute calcific longus colli tendinitis. Acute calcific longus colli tendinitis is an inflammation of the longus colli tendon that manifests with acute onset of neck pain that is often associated with torticollis and when...
BACKGROUND Our aim was to determine the surgical characteristics of an elderly cohort of patients undergoing resection of head and neck skin neoplasms. METHODS.: All cases of patients with head and neck skin neoplasms (excluding malignant melanoma) who underwent surgical resection in a regional referral center over a 10-year period were retrospectively reviewed. The study group comprised 152 pa...
BACKGROUND Head and neck cancers (HNC) are relatively common and often very serious diseases in both dogs and humans. Neoplasms originating in the head and neck region are a heterogeneous group. HNC often has an unfavourable prognosis and the proximity of the tissue structures renders extirpation of tumours with sufficient margins almost incompatible with preservation of functionality. In human...
Paragangliomas of the head and neck are rare neoplasms presented as cervical mass, generally bilateral, that arise from chemoreceptors located at the carotid bifurcation (carotid body tumors), along the vagus nerve (vagal paragangliomas), and in the jugular fossa and tympanic cavity (jugulotympanic paragangliomas). They are typically asymptomatic at the beginning, highly vascular, slow-growing ...
In 2002 there were about 144 000 new cases of head and neck squamous cell cancer (HNSCC) in Europe and 69 000 deaths, making it the seventh leading cause of cancer death [1]. HNSCC arise from the mucosa of the upper aerodigestive tract. They include cancers of the oral cavitiy, the pharynx (naso-, oroand hypopharynx), the larynx and the paranasal sinuses. The head and neck region includes diffe...
