To evaluate the role of pancreatic stone protein as a marker for early onset neonatal sepsis. Methods. A newborn infant had metabolic acidosis, tachypnea, and hypoglycemia. After the initial diagnosis of neonatal sepsis, she was given antibiotics but failed to respond. Further investigation revealed that her mother had taken aspirin throughout pregnancy. This case illustrates the similarities between symptoms of neonatal sepsis and those of a toxic reaction to salicylate.

The purpose of this study was to examine prophylactic efficacy of probiotics in neonatal sepsis and meningitis caused by E. coli K1. The potential inhibitory effect of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) on meningitic E. coli K1 infection was examined by using (i) in vitro inhibition assays with E44 (a CSF isolate from a newborn baby with E. coli meningitis), and (ii) the neonatal rat model of E. ...

Perinatally acquired bacterial neonatal sepsis is a low-incidence,high-risk disease. Although incidence of the most common etiology, group B Streptococcus, has been reduced by prophylactic strategies, neonatal sepsis has not been eradicated, and vigilance must remain high. Accurate diagnosis is difficult: signs and symptoms are hard to distinguish from other causes of neonatal distress, and defin...

Introduction: The burden of neonatal sepsis continues to be significant, more so in the preterm population. It is quite challenging to make early diagnosis because the early signs of sepsis may be subtle, and resemble those of other non-infectious processes; furthermore, cultures take time and the yield is quite low with wide inter-laboratory variation. Alternative diagnostic tests are simply n...

Background: Neonatal sepsis is one of the leading causes mortality in developing countries because its non-specific presentation. Blood culture gold standard for diagnosing sepsis, but results take 48 – 72 hours. Therefore, there a need an indicator that could be used as simple parameter to indicate possibility evolving clinician. The efficacy mean neutrophil volume must evaluated. Materials an...

With improved obstetrical management and evidence-based use of intrapartum antimicrobial therapy, early-onset neonatal sepsis is becoming less frequent. However, early-onset sepsis remains one of the most common causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality in the preterm population. The identification of neonates at risk for early-onset sepsis is frequently based on a constellation of perinatal r...
