background ureaplasma urealyticum (u. urealyticum) and mycoplasma hominis (m. hominis) are two important pathogens in neonatal respiratory tract infections. as low gestational age and birth weight increase the colonization rate with these pathogens, and they are also risk factors of chronic lung disease (cld), it is difficult to establish a statistically significant relation between these two f...

One hundred and eleven high risk neonates were subjected to (cranial ultrasound (CR-USG) Caranial sonography was performed by 2D realtime scanner with 5 MHz transducer through anterior and posterior fontanelle and temporo-squamal suture. One quarter of these neonates developed intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) within 120 hours of birth. Of them 42.8% neonates recovered completely, 21.4% developed v...

A single rotavirus strain causing asymptomatic infections as well as severe gastrointestinal disease has been described in the neonatal nurseries of the Christian Medical College, Vellore. In this study, quantitative real-time RT-PCR was used to determine the association of viral load with the presence of gastrointestinal symptoms in neonates. Viral load was estimated in terms of the crossing p...

Kin recognition has been demonstrated to play an important role in the social structure of a wide range of animals. Most studies to date have examined parent–offspring recognition only in species that provide offspring with direct parental care, however, there are several advantages to parent–offspring recognition even in the absence of direct parental care. In this study we investigated recipr...

INTRODUCTION Treatment of infections in neonates with gentamicin is a balance between optimising bactericidal effect and minimising adverse effects. Previously, at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Kolding Hospital, Denmark, neonates suspected of having infections were treated daily with gentamicin 5 mg/kg for the first three days, thus exposing the smallest neonates to double gentamic...

Lay Summary Necrotizing enterocolitis remains one of the most common gastrointestinal emergencies in neonates. Neonates admitted to a resource-restricted neonatal intensive care unit with presumptive diagnosis advanced NEC were reviewed. We able identify risk factors associated higher chance death or poor neurodevelopmental outcomes. Our outcomes are comparable international literature.

During positive pressure ventilation, arterial pressure variations, like the pulse pressure variation (PPV), are observed in neonates. However, the frequency of the PPV does not always correspond with the respiratory rate. It is hypothesized that PPV is caused by cardiopulmonary interaction, but that this mismatch is related to the low respiratory rate/heart rate ratio. Therefore, the goal of t...

OBJECTIVE Recent data suggest that during mechanical ventilation, lateral patient position (in which the endotracheal tube is horizontal) decreases the incidence of bacterial colonization of ventilated neonates. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of lateral and supine position on bacterial colonization of endotracheal tube in neonates. METHODS We conducted a prospective...

Much epidemiological evidence has linked low birth weight with late cardiovascular risk. In order to investigate the effect of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) on early atherosclerosis in the fetus, we measured aortic wall thickness (abdominal aortic intima-media thickness: aIMT) by ultrasonography in 15 neonates with IUGR and in 31 neonates considered to be appropriate for gestational ag...

This study was conducted to identify the prevalence of FV1691A and PT20210A mutations in neonates with symptomatic thromboembolism and in healthy neonates and adults. A review of 137 healthy neonates, 368 healthy adults, and 9 neonates with clinical thrombosis was done to investigate for hereditary prothrombotic mutations. For the neonates with thromboembolism, data were collected to reveal the...
