Sebertia acuminata (Sapotaceae) from New Caledonia has been shown to be a hyperaccumulator of nickel. The nickel content of the latex (25.74 percent on a dry weight basis) is easily the highest nickel concentration ever found in living material. The nickel is in the form of a low-molecular-weight, water-soluble organic complex.

The nickel transport system of Clostridium thermoaceticum was investigated with 63NiCl2 and an anaerobic microfiltration transport assay. Transport was optimal at pH 7 to pH 7.5 and 65 degrees C and decreased in the presence of metabolic uncouplers and inhibitors. Exogenous nickel was concentrated 3,000-fold over the apparent nickel concentration gradient during typical transport assays. Stored...

In support of a feasibility study of reproductive and developmental health among females employed in the Monchegorsk (Russia) nickel refinery, personal exposure and biological monitoring assessments were conducted. The inhalable aerosol fraction was measured and characterised by chemical speciation and particle-size distribution measurements. Unexpected findings were that: (i), pyrometallurgica...

We investigated fingers as a potential source of nickel transfer to the face in patients with allergic contact dermatitis to nickel and a history of facial dermatitis. Samples were collected from the fingers and cheeks of volunteers using the stripping method with standard adhesive tape, and nickel levels were quantified using mass spectrometry. Fingers and cheeks of individuals who had handled...

Two interlaboratory surveys of urine nickel analyses were performed in which eight or nine urine samples were distributed to laboratories in seven nations for measurements of nickel concentrations by atomic absorption spectrometry. In both surveys, wide discrepancies were observed in the values for urine nickel concentrations that were obtained in different laboratories by various analytical me...

The genomes of Helicobacter species colonizing the mammalian gastric mucosa (like Helicobacter pylori) contain a large number of genes annotated as iron acquisition genes but only few nickel acquisition genes, which contrasts with the central position of nickel in the urease-mediated acid resistance of these gastric pathogens. In this study we have investigated the predicted iron and nickel acq...

BACKGROUND Carcinogenicity of nickel compounds has been well documented. However, the carcinogenic effect of metallic nickel is still unclear. The present study investigates metallic nickel nano- and fine particle-induced apoptosis and the signal pathways involved in this process in JB6 cells. The data obtained from this study will be of benefit for elucidating the pathological and carcinogenic...

The experiments recorded in this paper were designed to investigate the effects of the inhalation of nickel carbonyl by rats and rabbits, and to study in detail the distribution of nickel in the body, the development of pathological lesions, and the influence of the therapeutic agent 2-3 dimercaptopropanol (BAL) on these changes. The study was made because occasional cases of accidental poisoni...

BACKGROUND Increased risks of nasal cancer and lung cancer in nickel refiners have been investigated scientifically and discussed since they were detected in the 1930s. Nickel compounds are considered to be the main cause of the cancer excess. Parts of the nickel producing industry and their consultants oppose the classification of water-soluble nickel salts as human carcinogens, and argue that...

cases and one of 290 con troIs in a hospital-based study between 1970 and 1980 in North Carolina and Virginia. Roush et aL. (1980) examined exposure to nickel, cutting oils and wood dust in a case-control study based on all sinonasal cancer deaths in Connecticut in 1935-75. Job titles were obtained from deaths certificates and city directories and were c1assified according to estimated airborne...
