The one-humped camel (Camelus dromedarius) is a seasonal breeder with a relatively short breeding period, when increased ovarian activity is exhibited (Shalash, 1965,1980; Nawito, Shalash, Hoppe ¿St Rakha, 1967 ; Novoa, 1970). In Israel, the normal breeding season occurs from December to early April. Female camels come into heat during this period and exhibit mainly follicular activity; there i...

Streptococcus agalactiae causes a range of clinical syndromes in camels (Camelus dromedarius). We report the genome sequences of two S. agalactiae isolates that induce abscesses in Kenyan camels. These genomes provide novel data on the composition of the S. agalactiae "pan genome" and reveal the presence of multiple genomic islands.

Rearing systems, stress factors, climatic changes, unhygienic conditions, sudden changes in feed and a low level herd health status were stated as predisposing factors to bacterial and viral pneumonia. In camels, pneumonia outbreaks are usually observed during the change from the dry to the rainy season (5, 17, 19, 25, 27). Only few studies were found in the available literature on pathological...

A histomorphological study of the thyroid glands of 15 healthy camels (Camelus dromedarius) of different sex group A (Males) and group B (Females), were investigated for gross and microscopic anatomy. Gross studies revealed that thyroid glands were located in between the third ring of trachea and the laryngopharynx portion of the pharynx and had two lobes, connected by an isthmus. They appeared...

UNLABELLED With 14 figures and 3 tables SUMMARY Each adrenal gland consisted of cortex and medulla that developed from different embryological origins and presented different cellular organization. One hundred male or female camel embryos or fetuses with crown vertebral rump lengths (CVRL) that ranged from 0.8 to 117 cm were examined. The adrenal cortex, which is derived from intermediate mes...

The Linguatula serrata is a toungue-shaped parasite that infections carnivores or insectivorous reptile as final host and herbivores as intermediate ones. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of nymphal stages of L. serrata in mesenteric and mediastinal lymph nodes of camels which slaughtered in Tabriz slaughterhouse, Northwest of Iran. In this study, a total of 185 camels (121 ...

The neuronal elements of the vomeronasal organ (VNO) of camel were investigated immunohistochemically. PGP 9.5 labeled the receptor cells in the vomeronasal sensory epithelium, but not the supporting or basal cells. OMP stained some receptor cells, but no immunoreactive signals for OMP were detected in the non-sensory epithelium. PLCβ2 labeled scattered cells in the sensory epithelium and a lar...

A Biometrical study was conducted on the digestive tract of 35 foetuses of the one-humped camel collected from the Sokoto metropolitan abattoir, over a period of five months at different gestational ages. The approximate age of the foetuses was estimated from the crown vertebral rump length (CVRL) and samples were categorised into first, second and third trimester. The mean body weight of the f...

A total of seven she-camels (3-4 years old) were slaughtered following the normal abattoir procedures in Khartoum state, Sudan. Longissimus thoracis (LT) muscle samples were aged for 1, 3, 5, and 7 days at 1-3° C. Chemical composition, muscle pH, drip loss (DL), water holding capacity (WHC), color, myosin heavy chain isoforms (MyHC) as well as lipid peroxidation (MDA) and vitamin E content were...
