The Surface Enhanced Resonance Raman Scattering (SERRS) and Surface Enhanced Resonance Raman Optical Activity (SERROA) spectra of myoglobin and the myoglobin–azide complex were measured on very dilute samples (100 nM protein) in order to analyze the sensitivity of SERROA spectroscopy when inducing small structural changes. While the SERRS spectra of the two compounds were virtually identical, c...

Here, we review the history, theory, measurement technique and experimental results on gyrotropic phenomena including optical rotation (optical activity), electrogyration, the Faraday effect and magneto-electrogyration in transparent crystals, including examples of structural phase transitions. Relations to the absolute structure are discussed and model calculations are performed on the basis o...

Classical and quantum mechanical theories of optical activity are reviewed with particular reference to the coordination compounds of the transition metal ions. The limiting cases of 'the inherently dissymmetric chromophore' and of 'the symmetric chromophore in a chiral molecular environment' are exemplified respectively by a discussion of the non-empirical exciton treatment of the tris-2,2'-bi...

We investigate the amount of scatter in the Tully-Fisher relation (TFR) when using optical long-slit H rotation curves to determine the velocity widths of spiral galaxies. We study a sample of 25 galaxies in the Coma region of the sky which were shown in Bernstein et al. (1994) to exhibit an extraordinarily low scatter of 0.10 mag RMS in the I magnitude vs 21-cm width TFR. Using the same I magn...

Copper ions are important biologically and environmentally—Cu is the third most abundant essential transition element in the body. However, too much copper has been connected to several diseases, and is also a significant environmental metal pollutant (Liu and Wu, 2011). Detection of copper has been studied in the field of analytical chemistry because of its toxicity to humans, bacteria, and aq...

Chiral and bianisotropic metamaterials, where coupling of magnetic and electric phenomena plays an important role, offer advanced possibilities for the control and manipulation of electromagnetic waves. Such a control is particularly useful in the THz and far-IR region where natural materials do not show strong response and thus they are not offered as components for a direct realization of ele...

It has been found possible to prepare the comparatively rare salt, calcium melibionate, in any desired quantity by electrolytic oxidation of a crude solution of melibiose. The melibiose solution , prepared from commercial raffinose, is subjected to electrolytic oxidation in the presence of calcium carbonate and calcium bromide, and the calcium melibionate is crystallized directly from t he elec...

Optical pumping of an atomic sample with narrow-band light can create sub-Doppler features, known as Bennett structures, in the velocity distribution of state populations. In the presence of static magnetic or electric fields, the corresponding sub-Doppler features in the index of refraction can cause nonlinear optical rotation and induced ellipticity of resonant light propagating through the a...

The information about molecular structure coded in the optical spectra must often be deciphered by complicated computational procedures. A combination of spectral modeling with the molecular dynamic simulations makes the process simpler, by implicit accounting for the inhomogeneous band broadening and Boltzmann averaging of many conformations. Ideally, geometries of studied systems can be deduc...

We examine the feasibility of a parity nonconserving (PNC) optical rotation experiment for the P3/2 → P1/2 transition of atomic iodine at 1315 nm. The calculated E1PNC to M1 amplitude ratio is R = 0.80(16) × 10−8. We show that very large PNC rotations (greater than 10 μrad) are obtained for iodine-atom column densities of ∼1022 cm−2, which can be produced by increasing the effective interaction...
