Dictyostelium responds to hyperosmotic stress of 400 mOsm by a rapid reduction of its cell volume to 50%. The reduced cell volume is maintained as long as these osmotic conditions prevail. Dictyostelium does not accumulate compatible osmolytes to counteract the osmotic pressure applied. Using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, we demonstrate that during the osmotic shock the protein pattern r...

A technique for determining the internal osmotic concentration of a small nematode using a modified nanolitre osmometer is described and used to investigate osmoregulation in the Antarctic nematode Panagrolaimus davidi. This technique enables the osmotic concentration to the measured with an accuracy of +/-12 mmol kg(-1). The pattern of melting in the nematode's different body compartments sugg...

Yeast cells adapt to hyperosmotic shock by accumulating glycerol and altering expression of hundreds of genes. This transcriptional response of Saccharomyces cerevisiae to osmotic shock encompasses genes whose products are implicated in protection from oxidative damage. We addressed the question of whether osmotic shock caused oxidative stress. Osmotic shock did not result in the generation of ...

We report here the draft genome sequence of Burkholderia puraquae type strain CAMPA 1040, a member of the Burkholderia cepacia complex. This strain, isolated from a hemodialysis water reservoir, harbors several stress tolerance genes, such as the systems for low oxygen survival, for copper tolerance, and for osmotic stress resistance.

Studies were conducted to determine the effect of osmotic and matric stress on germination and growth of two Fusarium solani strains, the etiological agent responsible of peanut brown root rot. Both strains had similar osmotic and matric potential ranges that allowed growth, being the latter one narrower. F. solani showed the ability to grow down to -14 MPa at 25 °C in non-ionic modified osmoti...

BACKGROUND Hypothermic hyperkalemic cardioplegia results in significant myocyte swelling and impaired contractility. These detrimental effects may be eliminated by the addition of an adenosine triphosphate-sensitive potassium (KATP) channel opener. This study evaluated the hypothesis that a KATP channel opener (diazoxide) would benefit volume homeostasis by limiting volume and subsequent contra...

Adaptation to changes in osmolarity is fundamental for the survival of living cells, and has implications in food and industrial biotechnology. It has been extensively studied in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, where the Hog1 stress activated protein kinase was discovered about 20 years ago. Hog1 is the core of the intracellular signaling pathway that governs the adaptive response to osmoti...

Aquaporins occupy an essential role in sustaining the salt/water balance in various cells types and tissues. Here, we present new insights into aqp-8 expression and regulation in Caenorhabditis elegans. We show, that upon exposure to osmotic stress, aqp-8 exhibits a distinct expression pattern within the excretory cell compared to other C. elegans aquaporins expressed. This expression is correl...

Glycine betaine is a potent osmotic and thermal stress protectant of many microorganisms. Its synthesis from glycine results in the formation of the intermediates monomethylglycine (sarcosine) and dimethylglycine (DMG), and these compounds are also produced when it is catabolized. Bacillus subtilis does not produce sarcosine or DMG, and it cannot metabolize these compounds. Here we have studied...

Epithelial cells of the thick ascending limb of Henle's loop (TALH cells) play a major role in the urinary concentrating mechanism. They are normally exposed to variable and often very high osmotic stress, which is particularly due to high sodium and chloride reabsorption and very low water permeability of the luminal membrane. It is already established that elevation of the activity of aldose ...
