An outbreak of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus occurred among members and close contacts of a soccer team. Typing of the isolates showed the outbreak was caused by the well-known European ST80-IV strain. To our knowledge, this is the first report of an outbreak of this strain among members of a sports team.

We report an outbreak of infection due to genotypically identical extended-spectrum beta-lactamase--producing Escherichia coli among patients in a liver transplantation unit. Control of the outbreak was achieved by a combination of contact isolation, feedback on hand hygiene, and gut decontamination with an orally administered fluoroquinolone. These interventions led to abrupt curtailment of th...

We report an outbreak of listeriosis in Austria and Germany due to the consumption of Quargel cheese produced by an Austrian manufacturer. At the time of writing this report, the outbreak was known to account for 14 outbreak cases in 2009, including four cases with lethal outcome. On 23 January 2010, the cheese product was voluntarily withdrawn from the market.

Vero cytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli O157 belonging to four phage types (PTs) caused 11 outbreaks of infection in England and Wales in 1995. Outbreak strains of different PTs were distinguishable by DNA-based methods. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis best discriminated among strains belonging to the same PT, distinguishing six of the seven PT2 outbreak strains and both PT49 outbreak strains.

To determine the cause of a 2008 outbreak of aseptic meningitis in Shandong Province, China, we analyzed samples from outbreak patients and coxsackievirus B3 samples collected during 1990-2010 surveillance. The cause of the outbreak was coxsackievirus B3, genogroup D. Frequent travel might increase importation of other coxsackievirus B3 genogroups.

Introduction The choice of outbreak detection algorithm and its configuration can result in important variations in the performance of public health surveillance systems. Our work aims to characterize the performance of detectors based on outbreak types. We are using Bayesian networks (BN) to model the relationships between determinants of outbreak detection and the detection performance based ...

The effect of a concurrent herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection on human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) load was evaluated. Sixteen subjects were identified with an active HSV infection and had pre-outbreak, acute-phase, and post-outbreak plasma (n = 16) and peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) (n = 8) samples for evaluation. All subjects were treated for an acute HSV outbreak with a...

This letter investigates the multiple routes transmitted epidemic process on multiplex networks. We propose detailed theoretical analysis that allows us to accurately calculate the epidemic threshold and outbreak size. It is found that the epidemic can spread across the multiplex network even if all the network layers are well below their respective epidemic thresholds. Strong positive degree-d...
