A 58-year-old male with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis cirrhosis presents with right lower extremity cellulitis, abdominal tenderness, and severe sepsis after sustaining puncture injury from a cactus on a property with feral cats. Blood cultures and diagnostic paracentesis were consistent with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis due to Pasteurella multocida, a gram-negative coccobacillus found in t...

Pancoast's syndrome due to chronic pneumonia by Pasteurella multocida. J. Ribas, L. Lores, J. Ruiz, V. Ausina, J. Morera. ERS Journals Ltd 1997. ABSTRACT: Infectious causes of Pancoast’s syndrome are extremely rare. We describe the case of a patient with Pancoast’s syndrome due to chronic pneumonia resulting from Pasteurella multocida. The patient was not immunosuppressed and had had no contac...

Mice immunized with the potassium thiocyanate extract of Pasteurella haemolytica, serotype 1, were found to resist a challenge infection of P. multocida type A, thus demonstrating cross-protection. This finding was further supported by the finding that an antiserum directed against the potassium thiocyanate extract of P. haemolytica was bactericidal to P. multocida and vice versa.

Pasteurella multocida is an inhabitant of the oral cavity of a variety of livestock and domestic pet species, especially cats and dogs. The case reported illustrates a 60-year-old, immunocompetent female patient who presented with P. multocida sepsis and aortic valve endocarditis. This required surgical bioprosthetic aortic valve replacement. Investigation also found infection-induced rhabdomyo...

We report a case of Pasteurella multocida meningitis in a 1-month-old baby exposed to close contact with two dogs and a cat but without any known history of injury by these animals. 16S rRNA gene sequencing of the isolate from the baby allowed identification at the subspecies level and pointed to the cat as a possible source of infection. Molecular typing of Pasteurella isolates from the animal...

Adhesion of bacteria to host cells is a crucial step in colonisation and disease pathogenesis. In this connection, further studies were conducted to analyse the attachment mechanisms of Pasteurella multocida to HeLa cells. Of 10 strains of P. multocida, belonging to serotypes A, B, D and E, all six of serotype A strains adhered strongly to HeLa cells. Exposure of the six strains to several phys...

To validate the identification of Pasteurella multocida-like bacteria negative for acid formation from sucrose, including isolates from bite wounds caused by large cats, 17 strains were phenotypically and genotypically characterized. Phylogenetic analysis of partially sequenced rpoB and infB genes showed the monophyly of the strains characterized and the reference strains of P. multocida. The s...

Strains deviating in key phenotypic characters, mainly isolated from cases of bovine pneumonia in five European countries, were genotyped in order to examine their genotypic relationship with Pasteurella multocida. Twenty-two strains of Pasteurella avium biovar 2, including variants in indole, xylose and mannitol, 18 strains of Pasteurella canis biovar 2 and variants of this taxon, five strains...
