A wide range of natural language problems can be viewed as disambiguating between a small set of alternatives based upon the string context surrounding the ambiguity site. In this paper we demonstrate that classification accuracy can be improved by invoking a more descriptive feature set than what is typically used. We present a technique that disambiguates by learning regular expressions descr...

Modern computing environments are characterized by a high level of dynamism. Two major kinds of dynamic changes occur frequently. The first refers to structural changes such as hardware and software upgrades, protocol and API updates, and operating system evolution. The second refers to dynamic changes in the availability of memory, CPU, network bandwidth and, in mobile systems, connectivity an...

History The ADAPTOR patterns were originally mined from a series of five different migration projects in different business domains within the telecommunications sector beginning as far back as 1993. Originally, the lessons of these projects were not captured as patterns, but this became a conscious aim from 1995 when, at first, individual design patterns were collected in a catalogue. Very qui...

In this paper we have formalised and studied a language for describing constrained patterns in biosequences. We have developed an e cient and elegant algorithm for nding a given pattern in a sequence. The e ciency of the algorithm is determined by the fact that it does not use backtracking unlike other algorithms for dealing with constrained patterns.

Computer Graphics represents an extensive domain which still lacks of modern software development principles. A wide range of graphical applications share common solutions that could be categorized in design or implementation patterns. Patterns embrace efforts to represent experience in software design and have been applied successfully in several areas such as database design, distributed proc...

Software is becoming an increasingly international affair. The internet has brought users closer together, and there is more outsourcing to overseas firms than ever before [16]. Since good software takes into account the characteristics of typical users, internationalisation produces challenges because of user diversity. The Planet pattern language aids in the specification of such systems, wit...

Architectural patterns(styles) are important artifacts containing specialized design knowledge to build good-quality systems. Complex systems often exhibit several architectural patterns in their design which leads to the need of architectural pattern composition. Unfortunately, information about the composition of patterns tend to be vaporized right after the composition process which causes p...

Despite the importance of temporal inference in several domains especially the question answering systems it remains still in its departure compared to other languages. This article deals with the automatic co-construction of patterns of temporal relations for the question answering systems. We have implemented this approach in temporal inference called TPE: Temporal Pattern Extraction.

The pattern language concept, adapted from building architecture and detailed software design, has recently been applied to HCI by a number of researchers. We argue that the “language” aspect of pattern languages is critical and outline thirteen research efforts in HCI patterns. Many pattern collections have broad scopes, and we argue that this results in patterns which are not as interdependen...

This paper presents two design patterns for the hypermedia domain: ‘Navigational Contexts’ and ‘Information on Demand’. They are applied in two different aspects of hypermedia applications design: the design of healthy navigational structures and the design of understandable and usable hypermedia interfaces, respectively. These two patterns are part of an effort for developing a Pattern Languag...
