For millennia, music has been a performance-based artform open to continuous variation and reinterpretation. More recently however, industrialisation has allowed for the mass-production of sound recordings, in turn bringing conjecture about the changed nature of music reception in society. This article reflects on related practice-based work by its authors and examines aspects of music producti...

We present a diagnosis system which combines the outputs of several classifiers performing local generation on the French Telephone Network. This data fusion process takes into account alarms occurring at different times and space locations. This allows to considerably improve upon the performances of a previous diagnosis system which relies only on local decisions.

In this paper we address the issue realizing efficient and equitable utilization of limited resources by collective decision of interacting heterogeneous agents. There is no presumption that collective action of interacting agents leads to collectively satisfactory results without any central authority. How well agents do for it in adapting to their environment is not the same thing as how sati...

The aim of this paper is to describe how the combination of speaker veri cation algorithms with a priori decision thresholds can improve the overall robustness of a real application. The evaluation is performed in the context of a eld application where each client is veri ed from a 7 digit pin code. This paper demonstrate that it is possible to increase the global performances of the system on ...

During the last years a great number of Query Performance Prediction methods have been proposed. However, this explosion of prediction method proposals have not been paralleled by an in-depth study of suitable methods to evaluate these estimations. In this paper we analyse the current approaches to evaluate Query Performance Prediction methods, highlighting some limitations they present. We als...

In this note statistical approaches to modelling sporting performances are discussed. Final year projects based on such modelling have proved popular in the past. With the upsurge in interest in the next Olympic Games in London in 2012, such modelling could provide teachers of statistics with a rich source of meaningful student projects. Students may be more motivated to do such projects simply...

This paper presents for the first time a method to evaluate the performance of local detectors under viewpoint changes on complex, realistic, and practically relevant scenes. The main contribution is a method which allows the automatic verification of detected corresponding points and regions for non-planar scenes. Using this method the performances of 10 different local detectors were evaluate...

The first objective of this study was to establish to what extent metacognitive skill development is associated with intelligence. As a second objective, the generality vs. domainspecificity of maturing metacognitive skills was investigated. Both issues have major implications for the training and transferability of metacognitive skills. Participants from four age groups (fourth-, sixth-, and e...

We review the main “omnibus procedures” for goodness-of-fit testing for copulas: tests based on the empirical copula process, on probability integral transformations, on Kendall’s dependence function, etc, and some corresponding reductions of dimension techniques. The problems of finding asymptotic distribution-free test statistics and the calculation of reliable p-values are discussed. Some pa...

Dr. Baker-Sennett and Dr. Matusov study the development of planning skills. With Barbara Rogoff and others, they have studied the collective improvisational skills that children employ while developing puppet and other theatrical performances. In this chapter, they describe this “playcrafting” work, and extend their discussion to emphasize a variety of ways that improvisational performances unf...
