Pneumothorax is a common disease worldwide, but surprisingly, its initial management remains controversial. There are some published guidelines for the management of spontaneous pneumothorax. However, they differ in some respects, particularly in initial management. In published trials, the objective of treatment has not been clarified and it is not possible to compare the treatment strategies ...

We report a case of spontaneous recurrent pneumothorax in a 32-year-old male with a family history of Birt–Hogg–Dube syndrome. Specific aspects of the surgical treatment for a pneumothorax within this particular setting are discussed as well as the potential underdiagnosis of this complex genodermatosis. The literature linking the syndrome to spontaneous pneumothorax is reviewed.

Cystic fibrosis is the most frequent and lethal inherited disease, affecting populations of European and Caucasian origin. Pneumothorax is life threatening pulmonary complication of cystic fibrosis. Bilateral pneumothorax is rarely seen and is a predictor of poor prognosis. It is well known that imaging-guided biopsy for pulmonary lesions will induce complications such as pneumothorax and bleeding. Preoperative enhanced CT imaging or intraoperative color Doppler ultrasound can be used to evaluate the vessel and avoid or reduce the operationrelated bleeding. However, the potential occurrence of pneumothorax makes us avoid performing CT scanguided biopsies. Th e occ...

OBJECTIVES To (1) determine the demographics of Chinese children admitted with primary spontaneous pneumothorax, (2) suggest how they may be quantified radiologically, (3) compare the difference in outcomes after their primary management by thoracentesis and chest tube insertion, and (4) review the local experience with surgical intervention for such children. DESIGN Retrospective, descriptiv...

Spontaneous pneumothorax remains a significant health problem. However, with time, there have been improvements in pathogenesis, diagnostic procedures and both medical and surgical approaches to treatment. Owing to better imaging techniques, it is now clear that there is almost no normal visceral pleura in the case of spontaneous pneumothorax, and that blebs and bullae are not always the cause ...

Tension pneumothorax is a life threatening condition that occurs when the intrapleural pressure exceeds atmospheric pressure. It requires prompt diagnosis and immediate treatment. Tension pneumothorax developing postoperatively after cardiac surgery is not uncommon but occurrence in the operating room during cardiac surgery is rare. We report a case of tension pneumothorax intraoperatively duri...

A case is described in which a tension pneumothorax complicated staphylococcal pneumonia 11 months after its onset. The delayed and subacute/chronic nature of the tension pneumothorax is unusual. The case also highlights the difficult differential diagnosis between subpleural lung cysts and encysted pneumothorax.
