Porous carbon materials have numerous applications due to their thermal and chemical stability, high surface area and low densities. However, conventional preparing porous carbon through zeolite or silica templates casting has been criticized by the costly and/or toxic procedure. Creating three-dimensional (3D) carbon products is another challenge. Here, we report a facile way to prepare porous...

On the basis of flow characteristics and material balance principle, a one-dimensional theoretical model of heavy-oil migration in porous media was established. The model considered micro-compressible property and nonNewtonian behavior of heavy oil. A new method, the transient method, was introduced to calculate the threshold pressure gradient in porous media. The method was designed to measure...

Porous silicon nanowires are synthesized through metal assisted wet-chemical etch of highly-doped silicon wafer. The resulted porous silicon nanowires exhibit a large surface area of 337 m(2)·g(-1) and a wide spectrum absorption across the entire ultraviolet, visible and near infrared regime. We further demonstrate that platinum nanoparticles can be loaded onto the surface of the porous silicon...

Current hip replacement femoral implants are made of fully solid materials which all have stiffness considerably higher than that of bone. This mechanical mismatch can cause significant bone resorption secondary to stress shielding, which can lead to serious complications such as peri-prosthetic fracture during or after revision surgery. In this work, a high strength fully porous material with ...

On page 2057, a Lewis acid porous carbon material with tunable hydrophilicity is prepared by temperature controlled pyrolysis of Al based metal-organic frameworks, by C.-H. Lin, H.-Y. Huang, S. Ma, and co-workers. This porous carbon highlights its low heat capacity, and high water uptake, which acts as efficient laser-absorbing matrix/sorbent for detecting trace levels of target compounds.

A novel three-dimensional porous Si-MWNT heterostructure was designed to meet the demand of high-capacity and long-life lithium storage. This material presented a stable capacity above 1000 mAh g(-1) for nearly 200 cycles, which benefited from its highly porous structure combined with robust MWNT connections that accommodated the host volume change and improved the electric conductivity.

Porous scaffolds are widely tested materials used for various purposes in tissue engineering. A critical feature of a porous scaffold is its ability to allow cell migration and growth on its inner surface. Up to now, there has not been a method to locate live cells deep inside a material, or in an entire structure, using real-time imaging and a non-destructive technique. Herein, we seek to demo...

Nanocellulose from wood is a promising material with potential in various technological areas. Within biomedical applications, nanocellulose has been proposed as a suitable nano-material for wound dressings. This is based on the capability of the material to self-assemble into 3D micro-porous structures, which among others have an excellent capacity of maintaining a moist environment. In additi...

Context. Following the recent insight in the material structure of comets, protoplanetesimals are assumed to have low densities and to be highly porous agglomerates. It is still unclear if planetesimals can be formed from these objects by collisional growth. Aims. Therefore, it is important to study numerically the collisional outcome from low velocity impacts of equal sized porous agglomerates...
