The ratio of independent random variables arises in many applied problems. In this article, the distribution of the ratio X/Y is studied, when X and Y are independent Rice random variables. Ratios of such random variable have extensive applications in the analysis of noises of communication systems. The exact forms of probability density function (PDF), cumulative distribution function (CDF) a...

existence of capacity drop phenomenon, as the difference between pre-queue and queue discharge flow rates, has been one of the controversial concepts of traffic engineering. several researches have focused on capacity drop existence and also its estimation issues. this paper aims to estimate capacity drop based not only on a comparison between breakdown and queue discharge flow rates, but also ...

Artificial neural models suggest that the Probability Density Function (PDF) of available inputs is crucial in determining the distribution of responses shown by a group of pattern-matching cells. This paper therefore describes a Monte-Carlo study of the PDF for linear optic flow components produced by ego-motion in a simulated pla-nar environment. The recent search for deformation-selective ce...

This article proposes a robust way to estimate the scale parameter of a generalised centered Gaussian mixture. The principle relies on the association of samples of this mixture to generate samples of a new variable that shows relevant distribution properties to estimate the unknown parameter. In fact, the distribution of this new variable shows a maximum that is linked to this scale parameter....

We present a formula to calculate the probability density function to the solution of the random linear transport equation in terms of the density functions of the velocity and the initial condition. We also present an expression to the joint probability density function of the solution in two different points. Our results have shown good agreement with Monte Carlo simulations.

RAND working papers are intended to share researchers' latest findings and to solicit informal peer review. They have been approved for circulation by the RAND Justice, Infrastructure and Environment Division but have not been formally edited or peer reviewed. Unless otherwise indicated, working papers can be quoted and cited without permission of the author, provided the source is clearly refe...

The cross ratio has wide applications in computer vision because of its invariance under projective transformation. In active vision where the projections of quadruples of collinear landmark points in the scene are tracked in the image sequence for robot localisation or online camera calibration, one often needs to compute cross ratios from noisy image data for some subsequent operations. Being...

The mathematical methods required to model simple stochastic processes are reviewed briefly. These methods are used to determine the probability-density function (PDF) for noise-induced energy perturbations of isolated (solitary) optical pulses in fiber communication systems. The analytical formula is consistent with the numerical solution of the energymoment equation. System failures are cause...
