All crop plants are polyploid and some genomes have been duplicated more recently than others. Advancements in cytogenetic and molecular tools, including high-density genetic mapping, fl orescent in situ hybridization, and genome and EST sequencing, have enabled new insights into genome composition and the history of genome duplications in crop plants. We review this evidence and discuss the re...

Many studies have examined the impact that the built environment has on physical activity, and much of the existing research posits that if communities will provide and improve active infrastructure such as trails, sidewalks, and bike lanes, people will become more physically active. However, most of these studies have used cross-sectional methods which have allowed them to establish correlatio...

David V. Anderson, Richard W. Harris, and Douglas M. Chabries Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah ABSTRACT A new hearing compensation algorithm based on a homomorphic multiplicative AGC (automatic gain control) is evaluated and compared against commercially available digitally programmable analog hearing aids. Both quantitative (speech recognition and threshold) and qualitative tests were use...

This work initiates a systematic study of relations between quantum and geometric knot invariants. Under mild diagrammatic hypotheses that arise naturally in the study of knot polynomial invariants (A– or B–adequacy), we derive direct and concrete relations between colored Jones polynomials and the topology of incompressible spanning surfaces in knot and link complements. We prove that the grow...

Brown eggs have gradually entered the traditional white-egg markets as a distinctive mode for packaging specialty eggs. A test was conducted at the Brigham Young University Sensory Laboratory (Provo, UT) to understand how consumers view attributes of the brown egg relative to the white egg. The objectives were to see how the consumer viewed properties of eggs by color and to examine the prefere...

Winter hardiness is a complex trait and poor winter hardiness limits commercial production of winter oat (Avena spp.). The objective of this study was to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) for fi ve winter-hardiness component traits in a recombinant inbred line population derived from a cross between the winter-tender cultivar Fulghum and the winter-hardy cultivar Norline. Crown freezing to...

Previous research suggests that female candidates do not face fundraising barriers; however, female politicians consistently report that fundraising is more difficult for them than their male colleagues. Using a regression discontinuity design to hold district characteristics constant, we study whether there is a gender gap in campaign fundraising for state legislators from 1990 to 2010. We fin...

We report on the γ-ray activity of the high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lacertae object Mrk 421 during the first 1.5 years of Fermi operation, from 2008 August 5 to 2010 March 12. We find that the Large Area Telescope (LAT) γ-ray spectrum above 0.3GeV can be well-described by a power-law function with photon index Γ = 1.78 ± 0.02 and average photon flux F (> 0.3GeV) = (7.23 ± 0.16) × 10 ph cm s. Over...
