The treatment of fractures in elderly patients is a big orthopaeadic and socio-economic problem. The number of fractures, especially hip fractures, increases year after year. Approximately 250 hip fracture patients per year are hospitalized in the Orthopaedic-Traumatology Clinic in Niš, which makes nearly 20% of all hospitalized patients. Enormous funds are spent for their treatment, especially...

Orthopaedic surgeons frequently have to deal with osteoporotic fractures of the distal radius, hip and proximal humerus. Low bone mineral density is not only associated with an increased fracture risk but also with more fracture displacement and reduction loss. The specific problems and main treatment options for these fragility fractures are reviewed.

INTRODUCTION In the United States, there are over 300,000 hip fractures annually, resulting in over $13 billion in medical costs (1). About 90% of these have been reported to be the consequence of falls (1). The remaining 10% are thought to be the result of fatigue of the bone tissue (spontaneous fracture). Repeated falls may increase fracture risk by affecting the integrity of the bone tissue;...

We report a case of an above-knee amputee who underwent dynamic hip screw fixation for a proximal femoral fracture and then open reduction and internal fixation a few years later for a further femoral fracture in the same stump. The patient had a good outcome. We aim to discuss the challenges in decision making, surgical technique and potential complications for the patient.

The treatment of basicervical femoral fractures remains controversial. The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy of intramedullary nail use in the surgical treatment of basicervical fractures. In total, 28 patients with basicervical fractures treated with proximal femoral nails were examined retrospectively. Fracture healing was observed in all patients, who were followed at least for 6...

Older age, dementia syndrome and impaired mobility are well recognized risk factors for fatality after fracture of the proximal femur. Urinary retention is recognized as a common complication of elective total hip replacement. In this investigation, we estimated the incidence of urinary retention associated with hip fracture in older women and assessed its relationship to 2-year post-operative ...

BACKGROUND New methods for diagnosing osteoporosis and evaluating fracture risk are being developed. We aim to study the association between low-frequency (LF) axial transmission ultrasound and hip fracture risk in a population-based sample of older women. METHODS The study population consisted of 490 community-dwelling women (78-82 years). Ultrasound velocity (V(LF)) at mid-tibia was measure...
