In many horses with proximal suspensory desmitis, radiopharmaceutical uptake (RU) in the proximal aspect of the third metacarpal (metatarsal) bone is normal. Increased RU reflects an enthesopathy, which may influence both treatment and prognosis. The metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) radiopharmaceutical, an analogue of norepinephrine, has been used to diagnose certain diseases in the cardiovascular system when radiolabeled with I. This radiopharmaceutical can also be used to treat tumors, such as neuroblastomas and pheochromocytomas, when radiolabeled with I. Its clinical use is often accompanied by a slow intravenous administration, where...
Strontium-89 is one of the most important radioisotopes used in nuclear medicine for therapy of bone pain caused by bone metastases. That is due to the beta radiation with sufficient energy for destroying metastatic sites in bone tissue. The routine application is ensured by introducing 89SrCl2 radiopharmaceutical and then inject...
[N-Methyl11 C](R)-1-(2-chlorophenyl)-N-(1-methylpropyl)-3-isoquinoline carboxamide [ 11 C]PK11195 is a widely used radiopharmaceutical for in vivo assessment of translocator protein 18 kDa (TSPO) activity using positron emission tomography. Here we present an interesting case of unusual distribution of [ 11 C]PK11195, that is a lack of uptake in tissues known for high expression of the TSPO.
Lymphoscintigraphy for sentinel node (SN) localization was performed on a 60-y-old man with a melanoma on his back. Skin contamination occurred as a result of the radiopharmaceutical dose administration. Skin contamination could result in a misinterpretation of the SN location. Careful observation of the procedure avoided a misinterpretation with this study.
Introduction One of the important applications of nuclear physics in medicine is the use of radioactive elements as radiopharmaceuticals. Metastatic bone disease is the most common form of malignant bone tumors. Samarium-153-ethylene diamine tetramethylene phosphonate (153Sm-EDTMP) as a radiopharmaceutical is used for pain palliation. This radiopharmaceutical usually emits beta particles, which...
Maladministrations in nuclear medicine: revelations from the Australian Radiation Incident Register.
OBJECTIVE To describe the incidence, type, causes and consequences of nuclear medicine maladministrations. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS Review of prospectively acquired maladministration reports within the Australian Radiation Incident Register (ARIR), a mandatory incident register managed by the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Individual reports...
An acute arthritis in a patient with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) was found to be associated with intra-articular deposition of carbonated hydroxyapatite crystals. A technetium hydroxymethylene diphosphonate bone scan showed intense uptake in the delayed phase scan of the affected joints. Synovial fluid analysis demonstrated uptake of the radiopharmaceutical drug directly onto the cry...
