RAPD was used to delineate the hilsa populations sampled from the Ganga, Yamuna, Hooghly, and Narmada Rivers at six different locations. Six degenerate primers were used to generate the fragment patterns from the samples collected. All primers were highly polymorphic and generated high numbers of amplification products. Nei's genetic distances were calculated between locations. The overall aver...

The production of informative random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers using PCR and a single primer is often accompanied by the generation of artifactual (noninformative) bands as well. When RAPD data are used to compute genetic similarity coefficients, these artifacts (false positives, false negatives, or both) can cause large biases in the numerical values of the coefficients. As a re...

Taguchi methods are used widely as the basis for development trials during industrial process design. Here, we describe their suitability for optimisation of the PCR. Unlike conventional strategies, these arrays revealed the effects and interactions of specific reaction components simultaneously using just a few reactions, negating the need for extensive experimental investigation. Reaction com...

We used 199 Corynebacterium diphtheriae isolated from 1995 to 1997 in Russia to evaluate the ability of random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) to identify the unique clonal group that emerged there in 1990. Our data show that RAPD can reliably, reproducibly, and rapidly screen a large number of strains to identify the epidemic clonal group.

With random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers, we have tagged a genomic region in Populus sp. involved in qualitative resistance to Melampsora larici-populina. Our approach was based on three steps: use of RAPD markers that can be quickly and efficiently researched: application of "bulked segregant analysis" technique on individuals of one interspecific family P. trichocarpa x P. deltoid...

Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used to analyze 119 DNA samples of three Colombian Anopheles nuneztovari populations to study genetic variation and structure. Genetic diversity, estimated from heterozygosity, averaged 0.34. Genetic flow was greater between the two populations located in Western Colombia (F ST: 0.035; Nm: 6.8) but lower between these two and the northeastern...

AIM To compare the Sbisa bar (Bagolini filter bar) with neutral density filters (NDF) in quantifying relative afferent pupillary defects (RAPD). METHODS 11 patients with a RAPD were graded and a neutral density filter bar was used to quantify the RAPD. This was repeated using the Sbisa bar. The Sbisa bar (Bagolini filter bar) is used by orthoptists to quantify density of suppression in amblyo...

Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis was used to evaluate genetic diversity among 13 soil Penicillium strains originating from widely dispersed areas. Twenty one of the 34 synthetic random primers were found to identify polymorphism in amplification products. The results show a high level of diversity of RAPD markers among the strains. All the strains could be identified by their ch...

The restriction fragment length polymorphism of the 195 bp repeated DNA sequence of Trypanosoma cruzi was analyzed among 23 T. cruzi stocks giving a reliable picture of the whole phylogenetic variability of the species. The profiles observed with the enzymes Hinf I and Hae III were linked together and supported the existence of two groups. Group 1 shows a 195 bp repeated unit (Hinf I) and high ...
