Multiple biological processes can generate sexual selection on male visual signals such as color. For example, females may prefer colorful males because those males are more readily detected (perceptual bias), or because male color conveys information about male quality and associated direct or indirect benefits to females. For example, male threespine stickleback often exhibit red throat color...

Computerand web-based testing procedures are increasingly popular for the assessment of cognitive abilities and knowledge. This paper identified color red as a critical context factor that may influence the results. Two studies showed that color red may harm the performance in webbased tests of general knowledge. In Study 1 (N=131) a red (vs. green) progress bar impeded the performance in a kno...

When all Green’s functions are known in a given gauge we may raise a question of whether it is possible or not to derive the corresponding ones in a different gauge. The answer is negative in QCD but affirmative in QED provided that we confine ourselves to the covariant gauge characterized by a gauge parameter α. We shall discuss the physical significance of this conclusion.

Pointwise a posteriori error estimates are derived for linear secondorder elliptic problems over general polygonal domains in 2D. The analysis carries over regardless of convexity, accounting even for slit domains, and applies to highly graded unstructured meshes as well. A key ingredient is a new asymptotic a priori estimate for regularized Green's functions. The estimators lead always to uppe...

A procedure developed earlier (Terrace, 1963) successfully trained a red-green discrimination without the occurrence of any errors in 12 out of 12 cases. Errorless transfer from the red-green discrimination to a discrimination between a vertical and a horizontal line was accomplished by first superimposing the vertical and the horizontal lines on the red and green backgrounds, respectively, and...

Recent research has shown that the color red influences psychological functioning. Red is hypothesized to be linked to aggression and danger in evolution, and these links are enhanced by culture-specific uses of red. Thus, color meanings are thought to be grounded in biologically based proclivities and learned associations. However, to date, there has been no direct evidence for the influence o...

The extraction of the Earth’s Green’s function from field fluctuations is a rapidly growing area of research. The principle of Green’s function extraction is often related to the requirement of equipartitioning, which stipulates that the energy of field fluctuations is distributed evenly in some sense. We show the meaning of equipartitioning for a variety of different formulations for Green’s f...
