Four types of Fc fragments of different sizes were isolated by papain treatment of rabbit immunoglobulin G under various conditions and by subsequent chromatographic procedures. 1. Brief digestion at neutral pH without reduction produced a molecule in which the Fab and Fc fragments were still linked by a pair of labile disulphide bridges, and the Fc fragment released by cleaving these bonds, ca...

The breakage of an epidural catheter is an extremely rare complication. We describe a unique case where a retained epidural catheter fragment after epidural anesthesia was treated by surgery. The epidural catheter broke during its removal, requiring surgery to remove the retained catheter. Intraoperatively, the removal of the catheter was attempted by simple traction, but was impossible because...

Human consumers of wildlife killed with lead ammunition may be exposed to health risks associated with lead ingestion. This hypothesis is based on published studies showing elevated blood lead concentrations in subsistence hunter populations, retention of ammunition residues in the tissues of hunter-killed animals, and systemic, cognitive, and behavioral disorders associated with human lead bod...

The use of a T-tube to drain the biliary tree after choledochotomy has been a common surgical practice. Inadvertent fracture of the T-tube limb during removal is a rare occurrence which can lead to several complications. We report a case of cholangitis caused by a T-tube fragment retained in the common bile duct 36 years after cholecystectomy.

A 59-year old heart transplant recipient was admitted due to continuous pain in her left axilla. A purulent collection was found at the site of prior defibrillator placement, where a remnant proximal segment of an electric lead was found. Two years before, the patient had had pocket infection treated with revision, but without device extraction. The remnant lead was eventually removed transveno...

Recreational ground squirrel shooting is a popular activity throughout the western United States and serves as a tool for managing ground squirrel populations in agricultural regions. Belding's ground squirrels (Spermophilus beldingi) are routinely shot in California, Nevada, and Oregon across habitats that overlap with breeding avian scavengers. Ground squirrels shot with lead (Pb)-based bulle...

BACKGROUND The majority of modern war wounds are characterized by high-energy blast injuries containing a wide range of retained foreign materials of a metallic or composite nature. Health effects of retained fragments range from local or systemic toxicities to foreign body reactions or malignancies, and dependent on the chemical composition and corrosiveness of the fragments in vivo. Informati...

Each reader is first asked to reflect upon the question: "Is a non killing society possible?" If not, why not? If yes, why?l For the purpose of the question, a non killing society is taken to be a human commu nity from smallest to largest encompassing all humankind that has the following characteristics: There is no killing of humans, at least, and no threats to kill. There are no weapons for ...
