Streptococcus pyogenes BM4478 and Staphylococcus aureus BM4479 were isolated from a patient undergoing rifampin therapy. High-level resistance to rifampin was due to the following mutations in the rpoB gene: Ser522Leu in strain BM4478 and His526Asn and Ser574Leu in strain BM4479.

Xpert-MTB/Rif is one of the most frequently used molecular screening tests for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis worldwide. We report false-negative assay results in the presence of rpoB Leu533Pro, which is associated with low-level phenotypic rifampin resistance. Accurate and timely confirmation of rifampin susceptibility results obtained with Xpert-MTB/Rif is imperative.

The existence of infections caused by multidrug resistant (MDR) Acinetobacter baumannii is a growing problem because of the difficulty to treat them. We examined the published literature and focused our analysis on the investigation of the synergism of colistin and rifampin against MDR A. baumannii isolates via systematic review and meta-analysis. A systematic literature search was performed us...

The rpoB gene of rifampin-resistant Rickettsia typhi (Rif mutant) and wild-type R. typhi were sequenced and compared. The Rif mutant rpoB had three nucleotide substitutions, which resulted in amino acid changes at residues 151, 201, and 271 and may be the basis for the rifampin resistance.

BACKGROUND The relationship between rifamycin use and either relapse or treatment failure with acquired rifampin resistance (ARR) among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients with tuberculosis (TB) is not well understood. METHODS We conducted a retrospective cohort study of HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected persons with rifampin-susceptible TB, (1) to compare relapse rates, ARR, a...

This study evaluated the activity of daptomycin combined with either gentamicin or rifampin against three methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) clinical isolates in vitro and one isolate in vivo against a representative strain (MRSA-572). Time-kill experiments showed that daptomycin was bactericidal against these strains at concentrations over the MIC. Daptomycin at sub-MIC concent...

We evaluated the activities of quinupristin-dalfopristin (Q-D), alone or in combination with rifampin, against three strains of Staphylococcus aureus susceptible to rifampin (MIC, 0.06 microg/ml) and to Q-D (MICs, 0.5 to 1 microg/ml) but displaying various phenotypes of resistance to macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin antibiotics: S. aureus HM1054 was susceptible to quinupristin and dalfoprist...

OBJECTIVE To estimate the prevalence of drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) and describe the resistance patterns in patients commencing antiretroviral therapy (ART) in an HIV clinic in Durban, South Africa. DESIGN Cross-sectional cohort study. METHODS Consecutive HIV-infected adults (≥ 18y/o) initiating HIV care were enrolled from May 2007-May 2008, regardless of signs or symptoms of active TB...

Rifampin plays a key component of the first line antitubercular drugs. However, resistance to rifampin in tuberculosis is gaining a foothold in the Philippines. Studies show that resistance to rifampin involves mutation in the rpoB gene which encodes the β subunit of the RNA polymerase. In this pilot study, DNA sequences of a 305-bp fragment of the rpoB gene were determined from 40 clinical iso...
