Bed elevation, feature adjustments, and spawning use were monitored at three Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tschawytscha) spawning habitat rehabilitation sites to measure project longevity in a regulated river. Sites enhanced with 649–1323 m of gravel lost from 3–20% of remaining gravel volume annually during controlled flows of 8–70 m/s and 2.6–4.6% of placed material during a short-duration (19...

In water supply channels, the brusque operation of control gates may induce large unsteady flow motion called surges. Such a rapid operation of gates must often be restricted, although it may be conducted to scour silted channels and sewers. Herein a physical study was conducted under controlled flow conditions to study the turbulent mixing in the very-close vicinity of a rapidly opening/closin...

An environmental water releases to the Snowy River was made in October 2011 (12,000 ML/day) as part of the Snowy River Increased Flows Program. The effects on the inlet entrance morphology and tidal response were measured on four field trips for each release to cover the flow peak and recovery. Water level recorders were deployed in the principal channels over the period of the releases and for...

Bridge pier scour is a complex process, which influenced by many parameters, including the presence of ice cover around piers. To better understand influence on bridge scour, an artificial cover, equipped with either smooth or rough surface, was constructed and tested experimentally. The positioned surface water submerged to specified depths in order replicate floating fixed (pressurized) condi...

Scour-induced sediment erosion poses a significant threat to the safety and longevity of infrastructure, including bridges, wind turbines, elevated buildings, coastal infrastructure. Despite well-known destructive consequences scour, accurate models that capture complexity its dynamics remain elusive, impeding development effective countermeasures. We provide comprehensive review existing liter...

The so-called lattice Boltzmann method is used to implement a numerical model for erosion, transport and deposition of sediment due to the action of a streaming uid. This approach is applied to describe the formation of a scour under a submarine pipe. Both static and dynamic properties of the process are well reproduced by our computer simulations.

One of the most concerning issues for researchers is to predict the shape and dimensions of the scour pit nearhydraulic structures such as the base of bridges, weirs, valves and stilling basins due to both financial and humanhazards induced by destruction of the structure. As the scour issue has its own complexity in relation to themultiplicity of effecting factors on it, in this study therefor...

The use of slot through a pier is a new method proposed to control local scour at bridge piers. In this study, control of local scour at bridge pier is studied using 20 pier models under clear water conditions. The models consist of one circular pier without slot, three round-nosed piers without slot, and 16 piers with slot. Two slot lengths were chosen (yl=b and yl=2b, where y1 is the length o...

In offshore structures, most of failures are caused by the lack of sufficient piles strength. Scour phenomena affects the load transition and the pile strength. The necessity of the consideration of scouring phenomena amplifies when the scour depth becomes remarkable, which can endanger the jacket stability. In this paper, a new method is used to consider the pile scouring using nonlinear pusho...
