OBJECTIVE The economic crisis and the implementation of austerity measures in Greece lead to significant socioeconomic changes. The effects of the crisis were mainly felt by the Greek population during the years 2011 and 2012. Temporal variation in the detectability of a species can bias estimates of relative abundance if not handled correctly. For example, when effort varies in space and/or time it becomes necessary to take variation in detectability into account when data are analyzed. We demonstrate the importance of incorporating seasonality into the analysis of data with unequal sample sizes due to lost traps at...

Background Classically, the diarrheal diseases were a top diagnosis in Romanian infectious diseases hospitals during summer. The increasing incidence of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) after 2011 might change this seasonality of diarrheal diseases, as warm season illnesses. Aim: to estimate the burden of different diarrheal diseases in an Infectious Diseases department and to evaluate if ...

BACKGROUND Recent research has corroborated the notion that seasonality in suicide is more heterogeneous and less consistent than postulated by former scholars. This work investigates the smoothing out of suicide seasonality in Switzerland between the late 19th and the end of the 20th century. It includes analyses by region and by suicide method. METHODS Monthly suicide frequencies in Switzer...

The seasonality of influenza in the tropics complicates vaccination timing. We investigated influenza seasonality in northern India and found influenza positivity peaked in Srinagar (34.09°N) in January-March but peaked in New Delhi (28.66°N) in July-September. Srinagar should consider influenza vaccination in October-November, but New Delhi should vaccinate in May-June.

Although the strongest ocean surface currents occur at horizontal scales of order 100 km, recent numerical simulations suggest that flows smaller than these mesoscale eddies can achieve important vertical transports in the upper ocean. These submesoscale flows, 1-100 km in horizontal extent, take heat and atmospheric gases down into the interior ocean, accelerating air-sea fluxes, and bring dee...
