A novel approach to gait pattern classification is presented. Based on data collected from patients at an rehabilitation centre we achieve a clustering according to various gait malfunctions by using self-organizing maps. The major benefit of such an approach is that the learning process ends up with a classification of gait malfunctions without the need of the tremendous effort to define a bio...

The self-organizing desk is a system that enhances a physical desk-top with electronic information. It can remember, organize, update, and manipulate the information contained in the documents on a desk. The system consists of a simple robot eye that can survey the desk, a module for smart extraction of information from the images taken by the robot, a module for representing this information i...

State-of-the-art systems for automatic writer identification from handwritten text are based on two approaches: a statistical approach or a model-based approach. Both approaches have limitations. The main limitation of the statistical approach is that it relies on single-scale statistical features. The main limitation of the model-based approach is that the codebook generation is time-consuming...

Kohonen’s Self-Organizing Map is a popular method which allows the projection of high dimensional data onto a low dimensional display space. Models of Self-Organizing Maps for the treatment of graphs have also been defined and studied. This paper proposes an extension to the GraphSOM model which substantially improves the stability of the model, and, as a side effect, allows for an acceleration...

A Self-Organizing Map was used to classify the Reuters Corpus, by assigning a label to each of the documents that cluster to a specific node in the Self-Organizing Map. The predicted label is based on the most frequent label among the training documents attributed to that particular node. Experiments were carried out on different grid sizes (node numbers) to determine their influence on classif...

In this paper we address the problem of analyzing and managing complex dynamic scenes captured in video. We present an approach to summarize video datasets by analyzing the trajectories of objects within them. Our work is based on the identification of nodes in these trajectories as critical points that describe the behavior of an object over a video segment. The time instances that correspond ...

We analyze a set of data describing N=3300 yeast genes, each gene characterized by d=13 variables (traits). First we performed an explorative data analysis and stated a high multivariate kurtosis. Next we clustered the data and visualized them using Kohonen’s self-organizing maps. This permitted us to get an idea how the data are distributed in the multivariate space.

This paper proposes a novel approach for a Constructive Self-Organizing Map (SOM) based world modeling for search and rescue operations in disaster environments. In our approach, nodes of the self organizing network consist of victim and waypoint classes where victim denotes a human being waiting to be rescued and waypoint denotes a free space that can be reached from the entrance of debris. Th...

Speech Perception of humans begins to develop as young as 6month-old or even earlier. The development of perception was suggested to be a self-organizing process driven by the linguistic environment to the infants [1]. Self-organizing maps have been widely used for modeling the perception development of infants [2]. However, in these models, temporal information within speech is ignored. Only s...
