Two techniques for quantitatively recovering normal-flora microorganisms from the skin of infants were compared. A technique using a swab to dislodge microorganisms from the skin compared favorably to a technique using a rubber policeman. The swab was easier to use and is suitable for use on infant skin.

Development of resistance to antibiotics is a major problem worldwide. The normal oropharyngeal flora, the intestinal flora and the skin flora play important roles in this development. Within a few days after the onset of antibiotic therapy, resistant Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae and Staphylococcus epidermidis can be detected in the normal flora of volunteers or patients. Horizontal...

this study was carried out to determine the effects of immunogen as a prebiotic on growth-related parameters and gut micro-flora in r. kutum fry. a basal diet was formulated using common feed ingredients supplemented with immunogen at 0, 1, 1.5, and 2 g kg-1 leading to four experimental diets.  fish were randomly distributed in 500 l fiberglass tanks (1×1×0.5 m). the experiment lasted for eight ...

Healthcare associated infections (HCAI) are often caused by micro-organisms that are not transmissible in the classical sense but which take advantage of breaches in the hosts defences against infection (e.g. bowel flora causing wound infection after surgery, skin organisms causing bloodstream infection via a vascular device). Microorganisms that cause HCAI may be derived from the patients’ own...

Microorganisms are a necessary part of everyday life. Many, known as resident or normal flora, adapt and live peacefully with the human body, providing benefits such as vitamin production or cellulose digestion in the intestines, and protection from disease-producing pathogens. Transient flora may stay for weeks to months but do not remain permanently because of fierce competition from resident...

A marked decrease in the content of ceramide has been reported in the horny layer of the epidermis in atopic dermatitis (AD). This decrease impairs the permeability barrier of the epidermis, resulting in the characteristic dry and easily antigen-permeable skin of AD, since ceramide serves as the major water-holding molecule in the extracellular space of the horny layer. On the other hand, the s...

During investigations of the microbial flora of the skin over haemodialysis shunt sites it has not proved possible to predict clinical infection by a preceding colonization of the shunt site with a pathogenic organism. The normal non-pathogenic flora of the sites is not specifically related to the flora of other sites on the body though Staphylococcus aureus on a shunt site appeared to be acqui...

Malassezia species (previously Pityrosporum) are normal flora of human and warm-blooded animals skin. The genus Malassezia is now divided into 13 species. Most of the yeasts show an absolute requirement for long fatty acid chains and specific procedures are required for their isolation, conservation and identification. Under appropriate conditions, the fungi can cause various skin diseases. Th...
