Three dimensional microscopy images present significant potential to enhance biomedical studies. This paper presents an automated method for quantitative analysis of 3D primary vessel structures with histology whole slide images. With registered microscopy images of liver tissue, we identify primary vessels with an improved variational level set framework at each 2D slide. We propose a Vessel D...

Slopes are subjected to stress redistributions during underground mining activities, and this may eventually cause deformation or landslide. This paper takes Madaling landslide in Guizhou Province, China as a case study to investigate the failure mechanism and its run-out behaviours by using discrete element method. Previous qualitative analysis indicated that the slope experienced four stages ...

This study documents the fractal characteristics of submarine mass movement statistics and morphology within the Storegga Slide. Geomorphometric mapping is used to identify one hundred and fifteen mass movements from within the Storegga Slide scar and to extract morphological information about their headwalls. Analyses of this morphological information reveal the occurrence of spatial scale inv...

A machine is described which can perform the Gram stain. Comparison of slides stained by machine versus hand revealed no difference in reproducibility or accuracy. In addition to providing clean, dry, uniformly stained slides, the machine saves 24 sec per slide when compared with a hand staining technique.

We propose a dynamic language model adaptation method that uses the temporal information from lecture slides for lecture speech recognition. The proposed method consists of two steps. First, the language model is adapted with the text information extracted from all the slides of a given lecture. Next, the text information of a given slide is extracted based on temporal information and used for ...

To prepare the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) electrode, we first functionalized the glass slide by soaking the glass in 1% aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES) in ethanol for 1 hour. We then washed the slide with ethanol. Previously, we tried washing the slide with water but this caused the slide to become opaque. Also, we originally cleaned the slide first with piranha solution, but eliminating ...

Current histological investigation of vaginal swabs after alleged sexual assault includes the scoring of spermatozoa (0, + to ++++) and the recording of visible tails. It is a method that is universally employed. Despite this method being used for 40 years, there has never been a study investigating its suitability for forensic science. Here, we investigate the reproducibility and subjectivity ...

Modeling tonal induction dynamics from naturalistic music stimuli usually involves slide-windowing the stimuli in analysis frames or leaky memory processing. In both cases, the appropriate selection of the time-scale or decay constant is critical, although rarely discussed in a systematic way. This study shows the qualitative and quantitative impact that time-scale has in the evaluation of a si...

Sample preparation is a major bottleneck in many biological processes. Paramagnetic particles (PMPs) are a ubiquitous method for isolating analytes of interest from biological samples and are used for their ability to thoroughly sample a solution and be easily collected with a magnet. There are three main methods by which PMPs are used for sample preparation: (1) removal of fluid from the analy...
